Why is Air Not Coming Out of My Vents?

You climb inside your vehicle, start the ignition, and reach for the fan control for the heating or air conditioning. But when you try to crank it up, no air comes out of the vents. It can make for a very uncomfortable trip, whether it’s hot or cold outside.

It’s important for the comfort of you and your passengers to regulate the temperature in your vehicle’s cabin. Not having air coming through the vents can also be a safety issue when you’re trying to defrost the windshield and front windows when they fog up and your visibility is affected.

There can be many reasons why the air isn’t blowing through your vents. The blower motor may have failed or the switch that controls it wore out. It could be as simple as a blown fuse, or perhaps an electrical component that regulates the fan speed may have stopped working. One of the ducts that direct the air from the outside to the cabin may have broken, or the air intake where the outside air is collected may be clogged up with leaves or other debris.

If your vents aren’t blowing air, it’s time to bring in your vehicle to have one of our trained technicians diagnose and repair it. They will examine the electrical and mechanical components to see where the problem is. The remedy can be something simple, or it may involve a more extensive repair.

Keeping the cabin temperature temperate and having good air flow are vital to your comfort, especially when the weather outside is extremely hot or cold.

Growling that Grates

A driver who uses his or her ears has a leg up on those who don't. In addition to noises helping you be aware of traffic, they can give you clues to potential problems in your vehicle. One noise to pay attention to is growling.

Growling is a universally recognizable noise; you know it when you hear it. In a vehicle, it's usually the sound of metal contacting metal, and not in a good way. So, what is your vehicle telling you if you hear growling when you are turning your steering wheel?

There are a few possibilities. One is the mechanical linkage that helps your steering wheel turn your wheels and tires. That system frequently has a hydraulic system that makes turning the steering wheel easier for you. That can be a source of growling sounds as well. Our trained technician can check your power steering fluid to see if it's at the correct level and still in good shape.

There are a few things that can go wrong with your power steering. If your fluid is low, that might be a sign of a leak in the pump, hose, or somewhere else in the system. It's important to have your power steering working properly since losing the ability to turn precisely can sharply reduce the safety of your vehicle.

If that growling sound is coming from around the wheel area, it could be a suspension issue. That growling is giving you a warning that a component such as a constant velocity (CV) joint or a wheel hub may be on the verge of failing, so it's a good idea to get it checked. Another reason you may be hearing growling when you are turning your steering wheel is that your brakes are engaging when they shouldn't.

Growling noises are trying to tell you something, and they can tell a trained technician a great deal. Inform your Service Advisor about the symptoms you're hearing. Owens 30 North Auto can put that growling to a halt. Your ears have better things to listen to.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Diesel engines are appearing in more and more vehicles in nearly every category from compact cars to pick-up trucks to high-performance luxury vehicles. In much of the world, 40% or more of passenger vehicles are equipped with diesels. North American is beginning to appreciate the power and fuel economy benefits of diesel engines.

Many maintenance items for diesel engines are similar to gasoline engines. One notable difference is the requirement of Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or DEF. Modern clean-diesel engines burn very lean to reduce soot and other pollutants. A side effect is the production of nitrogen oxides which are harmful to the environment. DEF is added to the exhaust and reacts with nitrogen oxide to produce harmless water and nitrogen.

Diesel vehicles have a tank to hold the DEF. A small amount of DEF is metered into the exhaust as the engine runs. When the DEF starts to run low, the DEF tank must be refilled.

Because DEF is so important to environmental health, your vehicle will notify you when it is running low. As the DEF level gets lower, you will receive additional warnings. At some point, the engine may go into “limp home” mode or the number of times which the engine can be started may be limited. So, don’t ignore the low DEF warning and be sure to refill the DEF tank.

The Heat is On
Hot Weather Vehicle Concerns

When the weather gets hot, some of the components of your vehicle are pushed to the limit. Here are a few things to watch out for as the mercury climbs higher:

* Your vehicle's air conditioning (A/C) system-You might notice it's blowing only hot air, even though when you last had it on in the fall, it was working fine. All sorts of things can fail in an air conditioning system, from the blower motor to the condenser, a worn compressor, or simply a refrigerant leak. A/C diagnosis and repair requires a trained technician.

* Tires - Heat is hard on tires. Rubber breaks down in sunlight and hot weather. Tire pressure climbs as the temperature climbs. Our trained technician will check your pressure, tread depth, cupping and other uneven wear, and track down the cause. It may be time for some new tires.

* Cooling system - It only makes sense that summer breakdowns are often caused by the vehicle overheating. Have us check your cooling system components, the coolant levels, the condition of your hoses, belts, and radiator.

* Battery - You probably thought cold weather was tough your vehicle's battery. Heat is harder on it and will shorten the life of a battery more quickly than cold weather. Make sure to have us test your battery with our specialized equipment and see how much life it has left. Depending on your climate, batteries typically last three to six years. A regular battery test will help avoid being stranded by a dead one.

* Brakes - Your safety depends on your brakes' stopping power, and during hot weather, they get even hotter than in other seasons. Have your brakes inspected periodically to make sure they're providing the stopping power they should.

* One more thing - Engine oil is really taxed during hot weather. Your friendly, knowledgeable service advisor can make sure you have the right kind and amount of oil to keep your engine's components working in harmony throughout the blistering hot weather.

The heat may be on, but you can be on top of it.

Feeling Powerless
Why Is My Battery Light On?

When one of your vehicle’s warning lights comes on, the first thing that comes to mind is, “Oh, no, what’s wrong now?” When it’s the battery light, it means there’s something wrong with your vehicle’s battery or charging system. And because both are important for your vehicle to work properly, it’s a good idea to get it checked out. Here are some things that may cause a battery light to illuminate.

It could be that your battery has failed. It could be on its last legs or completely dead. When it isn’t showing it has the voltage it should, your vehicle lets you know.

If it’s not the battery itself, it could be the system that charges it. The alternator is part of that system and could have a problem. It could be putting out no power, too little power, or too much. The alternator may not be working because the belt that drives it (using the engine’s mechanical power) could be broken or slipping. Or the alternator pulley may be broken.

The alternator needs to have a solid connection to the battery, and sometimes the posts that connect to the battery cables get so corroded, they can’t conduct enough electricity. Or it could be that a battery cable isn’t conducting power properly.

Because the alternator supplies power to other parts of your vehicle, if it gets overloaded, it will also cause your battery light to come on. Other possibilities are an electrical short in the charging system or a failed voltage regulator.

Your vehicle may be hard to start or it may not start at all if you have any of these problems. It’s important to bring it in to us so we can diagnose and repair the issue before you wind up stranded… and feeling really powerless.

Six Warning Signs Your Vehicle Needs Service

Some drivers don't worry at all about their vehicles and neglect taking them in for service. Here are six warning signs that it's time to head over to Owens 30 North Auto and get things checked out.

Warning Lights On — Vehicles have warning lights for everything from engine troubles to brakes to battery issues. They usually look like the system they're warning you about (a tire for under or over inflation, an engine for engine problems, etc.). It's telling you something. Have it checked out, especially a flashing Check Engine light.

Shaking or vibrations — Your vehicle should go smoothly down the road, but if you feel shakes where there once were none, something's wrong. You might feel them in the steering wheel or through your seat. It could be a suspension, tire, or electrical problem (among other possibilities), so have it checked out, so you know what's going on.

Burning smell or smoke — If you smell something like oil burning or see smoke coming out of your exhaust or from under the hood, don't just hope it will go away. These can be signs of serious troubles that need attention.

Bad fuel economy — If you find you're filling up more frequently, that's not a good sign. Many vehicles now have computers that will give you a numerical reading of your fuel economy. If you notice a dip, you may have something as simple as underinflated tires or something as serious as a sticking brake caliper.

Puddles under your vehicle — Vehicles use fluids for such things as cooling, lubrication, steering, and stopping. If you see them underneath your vehicle, it means they're leaking, and that can have very unwelcome consequences.

Mushy or noisy brakes — When you first got your vehicle, the brakes were probably quiet and didn't require a blacksmith's touch on the pedal to stop. Not only does your safety depend on properly working brakes, but other drivers on the road are also counting on your brakes as well.

When your vehicle breaks down, it can be inconvenient, dangerous, expensive, and time-consuming. Your vehicle communicates with you every time you drive it. Drive, look, and listen for signs that are trying to forewarn you about impending problems.
