The New Rules regarding Vehicle inspection in New Hampshire.
Car not inspected from last year? You aren't off the hook yet and can still get stopped by police.
🚨 NH DRIVERS: BIG CHANGES ARE HERE! 🚨
Starting this month, New Hampshire is officially changing the way we handle vehicle inspections. If you’ve been tired of the yearly "sticker shock," here is exactly what you need to know to stay legal on the road.
🗓️ The Big Date: January 31, 2026
As of January 31, 2026, New Hampshire has officially repealed the mandatory annual safety and emissions inspections for most passenger vehicles.
No more stickers: Starting February 1, 2026, the state will no longer issue or require those colorful windshield stickers.
What about 2025? If your inspection was due in 2025 or earlier this month, you were still legally required to get it. Police can still ticket for expired stickers until the repeal fully takes over at the end of the month.
🚗 What’s Changing (And What Isn't)
While the mandate is going away, the safety laws are not. You are still legally responsible for keeping your car in roadworthy condition.
⚠️ A Note on Safety
"Live Free or Die" now comes with a bit more personal responsibility. Without an annual check-up, it’s up to you to catch small issues before they become dangerous. Many local shops are still offering voluntary safety checks to give drivers peace of mind, especially before the snowy NH winter months.
Pro-Tip: Check your tire tread and brake pads regularly. Even without a sticker requirement, a police officer can pull you over if your vehicle appears unsafe or is creating excessive noise/smoke.
