Favorite shot from yesterday’s mini pre-romp trial run for the upcoming Maine Winter Romp in February. Go look it up if you haven’t heard of it. Our friends Derek and Cate who run .vt have Cate’s Defender 110 in this week to get some things sorted with the heavy black smoke, extreme hard start, and injection pump pouring out diesel fuel. We tested compression and found high 300’s psi across the board so we dig into the injection pump to swap it out. We’ll have this old girl purring in short time. Also check out the Pilgrimage VT and see their offerings for off-road excursions. There are none better in New England.

Preparing your TDI to make more power means it needs more flow. The 200tdi and 300tdi engines suffer from the inability to get the heat out of the head fast enough in their stock form. VNT turbos help increase flow in, but if you can’t get it out, you’re not doing yourself any favors. This 300tdi Disco motor had a worn valve cap on the intake side of cylinder 1, which means the valve wasn’t opening enough to get proper air in to burn the fuel. Proper valve adjustment and cap replacement will cure that. We then set the injection pump timing and tune the fuel ramp. Swapping from. 2.25” to a 3” downpipe paired with the VNT turbo will wake this old girl right up. Lower temps make a happier TDI.

Here we go. 300tdi MOD 110 getting setup for a new clutch, VNT turbo, 3” stainless exhaust, intercooler and a tune. The Winter Romp crunch has begun!
