GM’s Potential New Truck
General Motors has designed a new compact, two-door electric pickup truck with a 4 to 4.5 ft bed and a low roofline, aiming for a sub $30,000 price point. While GM states this design will be modified with time, this new truck hopes to target a new segment of small, affordable, two door, all electric pickups. Currently, GM’s rendered truck rivals competition from the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, which are both four-door, compact pickup trucks (Shown Above). With GM’s push for an all electric future, this new compact pickup slots into their overall goal of a fully electric lineup by 2035 and potentially 30 new all electric vehicles by 2025.

Best of CES Part 1: Cars/Electric Vehicles
CES 2023 came through with some amazing new cars and electric vehicles. Volkswagen and BMW showcased their color changing paint with BMW also developing the future of fully-immersive heads-up displays. Sony partnered with Honda to release the Afeela, which is the follow up to their prior Vision-S concept car, featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragons “Digital Chassis”. The Peugeot Inception Concept was also introduced, boasting an impressive 500 mile range and 680hp. Ram joins the likes of Ford, Rivian and Chevrolet in the electric pick-up truck market as their new 1500 Revolution aims to hit the market in 2024. Lastly, one of the most surprising vehicles to arrive was the Aska A5 flying car, which Aska intends to be used as an on-demand ride-sharing service in major cities by 2026.

Volkswagen ID.7
At CES 2023, Volkswagen unveiled their next electric vehicle with the VW ID.7. At first glance, the car pops with its interactive Electroluminescent paint that has 22 individually controlled areas and can visualize rhythm/music. Inside the car, the ID.7 ramps up the innovation with a new display concept with augmented reality heads-up display, 15in. touchscreen, and new Smart Air Vents, which feature intuitive voice controls that can respond to commands like “Hello Volkswagen, my hands are cold!”. In terms of range, VW estimates a range of 700 kilometers or about 435 miles based on WLTP standards. 

Personally, while Volkswagen excels in bringing innovative technology, we will have to see if those changes push the needle in terms of being competitive in the EV sedan market as official EPA ranges and prices are released. Imagine if you had the VW ID.7’s luminescent paint, would it be cool and useful or too distracting?

2024 Hyundai Kona
Hyundai truly buys into their shift to futuristic styling with the introduction of the 2nd generation redesigned 2024 Hyundai Kona. The Kona returns with Hyundai’s Parametric Pixels on various parts of the wheels, rear bumper and lighting, while also introducing their Tron-like Seamless Horizontal Lamp in both the headlight/tail light. Outside of the new look, the Kona grows in all dimensions gaining extra room in its length, width and wheelbase. As Hyundai aims to create a “living space” like interior, which it delivers on in its urban interior design and streamline dual 12.3 inch infotainment/gauge display.

How do you feel about the shift to more futuristic car designs from Hyundai and other brands entering the electric vehicle market? We think there needs to be a balance between the futuristic and classic car designs, but do you agree?

2023 Toyota Prius
Toyota releases its new generation of the Prius sporting a new-age, slim silhouette, accented by the horn-shaped front headlight and seamless rear tail light design. Toyota’s 5th generation hybrid powertrain features a larger 2.0L inline-4 and new lithium-ion battery switching from a nickel-metal battery. The new system produces an impressive 0-60 time of 7.2 seconds in FWD (9.8 seconds on the outgoing model) with 194hp and estimated 57 combined mpg.

How does the new Prius model stack up against the competition in the compact sedan market?
We personally think the all-new design is the best among its competitors. Do you agree?

2023 Honda Accord
Honda recently unveiled the new 2023 Honda Accord with a fully refreshed, sleek exterior with a new front grille and rear tail light design. Inside, Honda revamped the interior design with mesh vent covers, black trim and a 12.3 inch touchscreen display on higher trims with Honda’s first integration of Google built-in. Under the hood, the Accords start with a 1.5L Turbo engine for the LX, EX with 192 hp/lb-ft of torque. On the higher trims, the fan-favorite 2.0L Turbo is swapped for a new two motor hybrid electric system with a 2.0L in-line 4 cylinder, pushing 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque.
