Rebound vs. Compression Damping

Adjusting your clickers is an often overlooked aspect of suspension tuning. Spending a little bit of time learning about the adjustment process can go a long way.

Before making any adjustments, know your stock settings. Either take a picture you can reference from your tuner, download your manual and screenshot the settings, or some adventure bikes have the settings under the seat.

Tune one thing at a time, and take your time. Take it for a ride and see if it made it better or worse. Once you have the most apparent issues minimized, record what made the difference and fine tune from there.

Progressive Springs vs. Linear Springs

Suspension is about building a comfortable, predictable, and confidence inspiring ride; however, that means different things to different riders.

If you are riding long distances on rough roads and your suspension is beating you up, a progressive rate spring will be more comfortable than a straight rate or linear spring.

If you are riding aggressively and value more precision and sharpness, you may prefer to run a linear spring.

Loading up a motorcycle for a long trip or a 2-up ride is going to throw off your suspension geometry. The more weight on the back of the bike, the lighter the front end gets. This can cause the bike to feel twitchy.

With a traditional shock, adjusting the preload will get you in the ballpark as long as you aren't undersprung.
