Injector cleaning and balancing can be valuable finishing detail work on a build. When tuning and reading a cumulative lambda value from the exhaust collector you’re seeing the result of the combined fueling from all injectors in the system. If one lags behind the others the engine can suffer from a single cylinder lean condition, costing horsepower and in the worst of cases when used long enough, even an engine. By cleaning the injectors and verifying volumetric flow you take away this guess work.
A further step that can be taken is testing multiple sets of injectors and selecting a set which all flow the same amount. This in theory only leaves variations in airflow across the cylinders as the varying factor to the end result. In the tuning process this can be overcome by taking a step even further by monitoring all cylinders individually and giving each its own custom tune.
Fuel injectors are fairly robust devices and it is reasonably uncommon to see major failures, but we like peace of mind. While this bench test may seem rudimentary due to manual reading of the meniscus in each graduated cylinder, it is far better than guessing.
