A question we get often: does having your car serviced here void your factory warranty?

No. A federal law called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits manufacturers from requiring dealership service to keep your warranty valid, unless they're providing that service free of charge.

There are a few things that do still go to the dealer, including warranty repairs themselves and safety recalls. But routine maintenance and most repairs are genuinely your choice.

Our latest post explains what the law covers, the one real exception worth knowing about, and why keeping good service records matters.

No, using an independent shop does not void your factory warranty. Here’s what the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act actually says and what records to keep.

Hybrid and EV owners: your maintenance list is shorter than it used to be. It isn't empty.

The good news first. No oil changes on a fully electric vehicle. No spark plugs, no timing belt, no exhaust system. And thanks to regenerative braking, brake pads commonly last two to three times longer than on a gas car.

The part that catches owners off guard:

Tires wear faster. EVs are heavy and deliver instant torque, so rotation and proper inflation matter more, not less.

Brakes still need inspection. When pads barely get used, the failure mode shifts from wear to corrosion. That matters in a climate like ours.

Brake fluid ages on a calendar, not on mileage. Most manufacturers want it replaced every two to three years regardless of how often you use the pedal.

That 12-volt battery. Nearly every EV has one, it lasts three to five years, and when it dies your car won't start even with a full traction battery.

Full breakdown is on our site.

Hybrids and EVs need less maintenance, not none. Learn what still needs regular attention, from tires and brake fluid to the 12-volt battery most owners forget about.

Quick question: do you know how long your brakes are supposed to last? What about your battery? Your timing belt?

Most drivers don't have a clear answer, and that's completely understandable. There's a lot to keep track of. But knowing the general replacement timeline for your car's major components is one of the best ways to stay ahead of repairs rather than getting blindsided by them.

We just published a reference guide covering the lifespan of:
🔧 Tires
🔧 Brakes
🔧 Battery
🔧 Serpentine and timing belts
🔧 Spark plugs
🔧 Air filters
🔧 Coolant and transmission fluid

Plus the warning signs to watch for when each one is nearing the end of its life.

How long do brakes, batteries, tires, and belts really last? Bret's Auto Repair breaks down the replacement timelines every driver should know, and the warning signs to watch for.

Road trip season is here - is your car ready for it?

Most drivers spend more time planning their route than they do checking whether their vehicle can actually handle the drive. And that's usually fine... until it isn't.

We just published a full road trip prep checklist covering everything worth checking before a long drive, including:

✅ Tires — pressure, tread, and your spare
✅ Fluids — oil, coolant, brake fluid, and more
âś… Brakes and battery
âś… Belts, lights, and wipers
âś… What to pack in a basic emergency kit

Don't let a preventable issue turn your trip into a headache.

Planning a road trip? Don't hit the highway without checking these key systems first. Bret's Auto Repair in Lynnwood breaks down everything your car needs before a long drive.

Real talk: the 3,000-mile oil change rule is a myth for most modern vehicles.

It made sense decades ago, when engines and oil technology were very different. But for the majority of cars on the road today (especially those using full synthetic oil) the recommended interval is significantly longer.

So where did the 3,000-mile rule come from? And how often should you actually be changing your oil?

We just published a no-nonsense breakdown covering:
âś… Why the 3,000-mile rule stuck around long after it stopped applying
âś… What your owner's manual actually recommends
âś… How oil type and driving conditions affect your interval
âś… Signs your oil may need attention before your next scheduled change

Spoiler: the answer is probably in your glove box.

The 3,000-mile oil change rule is outdated for most modern vehicles. Find out how often you should really be changing your oil — and why your owner's manual has the answer.

Not sure if a repair estimate is fair? You're not alone.

A legitimate estimate should always include an itemized parts list, labor costs broken out separately, and a clear explanation of what's wrong and why it needs to be fixed. If you're getting a vague lump sum with no breakdown - that's worth asking about.

We just published a helpful guide on what every honest estimate should include, the red flags to watch for, and the questions worth asking before you approve any repair.

Not sure if your repair estimate is fair? Learn what every honest estimate should include, the red flags to watch for, and what to do if something doesn't feel right.

Did you know that sticking with the same auto repair shop can actually save you money and help your car last longer?

When your technician knows your vehicle's history, they can catch small problems early, make smarter maintenance recommendations, and give you advice that's tailored to your specific car — not a generic checklist.

We recently shared a new blog post on exactly why that long-term relationship matters, and what to look for in a shop worth staying with. Read it here:

Switching repair shops every time could be costing you more than you think. Learn why sticking with the same auto repair shop leads to better car care, lower costs, and a vehicle that lasts longer.
