Praying for calm and focus for these sweet peeps as they just started their AP Calculus Exam 🧔 They’ve worked hard and learned so much this year. For some this could mean never having to take a math in college and that would be a great relief. For others, this is just one step in the STEM majors they are choosing. For all, I pray they are rewarded with great success on this 3 hour and 15 minute exam. Much Love to All 🧔

I need Onion Education from the real gardeners out there. Last year in my very first veggie garden I replanted onion root bottom slices from grocery store cooking onions. I knew they grew greens easily in water but didn’t think they would grow a new onion.

My plan was to line my raised beds with these free scraps for the smell to deter pests and to cut the green tops to use like chives (fresh and dried). After all, we cook with a lot of onions. This has been going well.

Tonight I noticed a section of onion tops that had fallen over like big onions when they are ready to harvest. So, I dug them. My kitchen scraps grew new little onions. I’m so excited.

I’m assuming these small onions should be used immediately for fresh eating or cooking.

Question: Can they also be dried and used like the little onion sets, planted this fall or next spring to grow bigger onions in their second season??? Any helpful advice is appreciated.

Grade Floors
I respect the confidentiality of those responding to my posts privately and am glad to address some concerns on your behalf. Let’s clear up a gap in communication between school, home, and the public. Did you know that no effort may still get students a minimal score? I’m told most elementary, intermediate, and middle school teachers are not allowed to put zeros in the grade book. Some say a minimum of 50, some say 60 must be entered for every grade in the grade book at their school.

Some parents have no clue when their students do not do their work. Wouldn’t the online gradebook available to every parent 24-7 be a great place to communicate that zero efficiently?

When I first heard about grade floors I thought it was fraudulent and should be illegal. Isn’t that lying? There’s the title of an assignment with a number grade beside it. Surely that’s what my student earned. At the very least couldn’t you put a zero in the grade book but check the box that says ā€œnot included in final gradeā€ or ā€œmissing assignmentā€ if that’s the real objective? At least that wouldn’t be a lie… And may clear up some miscommunication about my students’ true work ethic. Entering a numeric value should represent the students quality of work or mastery of that content.

By the way.., Don’t be embarrassed. I was one of those unknowing parents (and I was a high school teacher in the same district with no clue). How could I not know? Or realize? Or even suspect? My grown children told me they often did not do their school work and still got 50s. Ok - one of them told me he never did homework or class work because he knew he could ace every test and still get a B or C in every course šŸ’© Evidently it was common knowledge among students. I was not that student so I had no clue. Why not just do your best wherever you find yourself? Evidently not everyone thinks that way.

So for those high school teachers and college professors currently discussing their shock and awe of the amount of zeros their students earned …. It may be the first time those students are actually seeing, keeping, and counting those zeros. These are the good kids. They’ve always had As, Bs, and Cs on that final grade even when they occasionally did not do the work. Experience tells them somehow it will work out. Our math don’t math. No wonder they’re confused.

That Real World Gonna Hit Hard šŸ”Ø

To students with this experience: I’m sorry if you didn’t learn to struggle in a safe environment. I’m sorry if things were so easy you were not empowered by your own ability to recover from what you thought was failure.

Employers: I’m sorry that you have to be the ones to finally teach them. When you don’t show up, you don’t get paid. When you don’t do a good job, you get fired.

End of school year check in: Are you satisfied with what your child/student learned at school this year? Is your student’s learning meeting your age appropriate expectations? I’d love to know your thoughts about each grade level, subject, etc. As a teacher, each quarter I reflect on what my students have demonstrated. In high school, I judge my teaching by whether or not I feel each individual’s grade matches the individual student’s mastery of the content. I’ve spent the last 24 years adjusting curriculum, assessment methods, pacing, my tutoring availability, all the things on my end, …. So that I could honestly say I’ve offered a system to accurately measure every student’s effort and mastery of the content. I always build in enough effort grades so that any student giving their best effort will not fail. In my classes, a 60 usually means you did your best but math is not your thing. Any grade above 60 actually reflects what % of the content you’ve mastered. Any grade below 60 means you didn’t even complete all the effort work. Let’s be honest. A zero should count as a zero. I’m probably too lenient in that I do accept late work and I’m probably a little too nagging-mom-like. I am pretty strict about required tutoring if needed to get you to that 60. I have to know that you are actually doing the work yourself. Is that what each grade means to you? Do you know how to see what the state standards are for each course? Would you like to? Our state standards for math are changing. Here’s a link in case you’d like to see the new standards. My oldest grandchild is finishing 5K. I’m printing out those kindergarten math standards and checking to see if he can do these things. Bless his heart 🩵 I want to know if he’s ready for first grade 🤩

ā™„ļø Sometimes it’s the little things ā™„ļø One of my students left me a ā€œGood Morningā€œ message beneath the desk next to my classroom door. I’m used to coming into an empty classroom each morning. I come in before their IDs let them enter the building so there’s never anyone waiting at the door; so this felt really special. Less than 2 weeks left with these sweeties as the AP Calculus test is coming up on May 13. Oooooooooo Noooooooo I’m missing them already 🄲

Celery anyone? Started Utah Tall Celery seeds in winter sowing jug then transplanted spring ā€˜23. It’s been evergreen and producing for over a year. Lessons learned: older stalks can get bitter but my rabbits still love it and the newer stalks taste great again. I want to continue experimenting with various placement around the property for optimum shade, water, and other growing conditions. I’m pleased with my first year of learning how to get veggies started. Now I want to learn to grow for best taste. šŸ‘… šŸŒæšŸƒšŸŒ±

Seriously asking you to join me in prayer. My love to everyone who reads this. Let's pray for each other today because prayers are needed right now. If I don't see your name, I'll understand. I ask my family and friends, wherever you might be, to kindly post this status for one hour to whisper a prayer for all of those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, or worries of any kind and need to know that someone cares. Do it for all of us, for nobody is immune. I hope to see this on the walls of my family and friends. I did it for someone else, and you can, too! I copied & posted to my wall. Done!
