Flying taxis are no longer science fiction — they're coming to American skies this summer.

The US Department of Transportation and the FAA have approved eight electric air taxi programs to operate across 26 states, with flights expected to begin as early as summer 2026. This is part of the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, launched under a 2025 executive order to fast-track next-generation aircraft into real airspace.

Companies like Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies, and Wisk Aero are all part of the program. These electric aircraft are quiet, fast, and designed for short urban trips — think city center to airport in under 15 minutes.

What makes this historic is that these aircraft are cleared to carry passengers and even generate revenue before completing full FAA type certification — a first in US aviation history.

The numbers in the latest spec showdown are difficult to overlook. The Tesla Model S Plaid rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.99 seconds, while the newly introduced Ferrari Luce takes 2.4 seconds to hit the same mark. That difference stands out despite the Luce appearing stronger on paper, offering 1,050 horsepower compared to the Plaid’s 1,020, four electric motors instead of three, a larger 122 kWh battery pack, and quicker 350 kW charging speeds.

Tesla, however, counters with the metrics that matter most in everyday performance. The Model S Plaid delivers an EPA-estimated 348 miles of range, compared to about 280 miles for the Ferrari, along with a slipperier 0.208 drag coefficient, a lighter 4,839-pound curb weight, and Full Self-Driving technology that the Luce does not offer. The most dramatic contrast may be the pricingp: the Plaid starts around $95,000, while the Luce enters the market near $640,000, making the Tesla nearly seven times less expensive.

The comparison highlights just how far Tesla has advanced EV performance, combining supercar-level acceleration, efficiency, and autonomous tech at a price point traditional manufacturers like Ferrari — even with their first electric model — still cannot approach.
