A drastic turnaround: The parrot was given a new friend, but absolutely refused to accept it!

Having a baby in the U.S. could soon become more complicated and potentially more expensive because of a major change in how maternity care is billed. Starting in January, new medical billing codes will shift pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care away from a single “bundled” payment toward an à la carte, fee-for-service system. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists supports the move, arguing it better reflects today’s more complex pregnancies and allows doctors to be paid more accurately for extra visits, high-risk care and extended postpartum follow-up.

Consumer advocates and some employers, however, warn that more billing line items could translate into higher out-of-pocket costs, especially for people with high-deductible insurance plans. Under federal rules, many prenatal and some postpartum services must still be covered as preventive care at no cost, but tests, specialist visits and parts of labor and delivery can generate additional charges. Experts say the real impact will depend on how insurers and Medicaid decide to implement the new codes and whether they use them to support better care or simply pay for more services. With about 3.6 million births a year, even small pricing changes could affect millions of families.

Ten hostages were rescued safely after a tense 15‑hour standoff at a downtown Bakersfield, California, office building ended with the suspect shot and killed by an FBI hostage rescue team. The incident began Tuesday afternoon when 41‑year‑old Anthony Searles‑Harris entered a building that houses a Chase Bank branch and offices of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools and claimed to have an explosive device strapped to his body, as well as another attached to one of the hostages.

Authorities say Searles‑Harris barricaded himself inside with 10 school district employees, tying up several of them as negotiators from local law enforcement and the FBI worked through the night to achieve a peaceful surrender. Two hostages, including a diabetic person in need of medication, were released Tuesday evening. In the early hours of Wednesday, the FBI’s elite hostage rescue team from Quantico moved in around 4:30 a.m., fatally shooting the suspect and freeing the remaining hostages without physical injury.

Investigators later revealed that Searles‑Harris had prior convictions for violent crimes and a s*x offense involving a minor, and was dishonorably discharged from the Army in 2007 after going AWOL. Officials praised the coordinated response and said victim specialists are now supporting the hostages as they cope with the emotional impact, while detectives continue to examine the suspect’s background and social media posts to determine his motive.

SpaceX is set to launch what could become the largest stock market debut in history, with plans to raise up to 75 billion dollars in an initial public offering this month. The company, formally known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp., told regulators it will sell about 555.6 million shares at 135 dollars each, implying a market value of roughly 1.77 trillion dollars — a level that would put SpaceX among the world’s most valuable companies.

As CEO, chief technical officer and chairman, Elon Musk would control about 82% of SpaceX’s voting power through special Class B shares that carry 10 votes each. Based on current estimates of his holdings, analysts say the IPO valuation could boost his net worth enough to make him the world’s first trillionaire, although most of his wealth would remain tied up in stock rather than cash.

Despite the sky‑high valuation, SpaceX is currently losing money: the filing shows a 2.6 billion dollar operating loss last year on 18.7 billion dollars in revenue. The company says it will use IPO proceeds to expand its Starlink satellite network, invest in rockets and build out ambitious artificial intelligence infrastructure, including long‑term plans for data centers in space.

Musk has framed SpaceX’s mission in sweeping terms, describing the IPO as a step toward funding permanent human settlements on the moon and Mars to protect humanity from “existential threats.” Investors and regulators, meanwhile, will be watching how the public markets respond to one of the boldest — and riskiest — offerings in years, which could also pave the way for major AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI to follow with their own blockbuster IPOs.

Volunteers in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are providing comfort through food as the country battles a worrying outbreak of a rare Ebola strain. In Bunia, the heart of the Bundibugyo virus outbreak, U.N. World Food Programme volunteers like Arlette Basekawike and nurse Esther Bao prepare and deliver hot meals to patients and medical staff at the Evangelical Medical Center. They cook dishes such as porridge, omelets, fish with fufu and goat stew, aiming to keep patients strong enough to tolerate treatment and give health workers the energy to continue their work.

Health officials say there have been 321 confirmed Ebola cases and 48 deaths across Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, while suspected cases dropped sharply after investigations ruled many out. Neighboring Uganda has reported 15 cases and one death and recently closed its border, a move the International Organization for Migration warns could push people onto informal footpaths where screening is limited.

Aid agencies stress that this Ebola outbreak is “a crisis on top of a crisis” in a region already suffering severe food insecurity and conflict‑driven displacement. WFP has served more than 400 meals since the food support began, but officials warn that funding cuts from major donors could soon force them to ration who receives food, even as Ebola responders stress how crucial nutrition is to patient recovery and community trust.

U.S. agriculture authorities have confirmed a flesh‑eating New World screwworm in a 3‑week‑old calf in Zavala County, south Texas, prompting an emergency effort to prevent the parasitic fly from spreading further. Larvae were found in the calf’s umbilical area, the first confirmed detection of this pest in the United States so far this year. To contain the threat, officials created a 12‑mile “infested zone,” imposed quarantines, increased screwworm trapping along the border and activated an incident command team with the Texas Animal Health Commission.

The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose maggots infest livestock and other warm‑blooded animals, and in rare cases humans, by feeding on living tissue in open wounds or natural body openings, potentially causing severe or fatal infections if not treated quickly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the species is usually found in South America and parts of the Caribbean, but in recent years it has moved north through Central America into Mexico, where more than 26,000 cases have been reported and around 2,700 remain active.

So far, only one infected animal has been confirmed in the U.S., and the USDA says a human case detected last year recovered fully with no evidence of further spread. Officials are urging farmers and veterinarians to report suspicious wounds immediately, stressing that early detection and close cooperation between public health and veterinary services are critical to stopping the pest before it becomes established again.

Two critically endangered New Zealand parakeets, Nacho and Trixie, have been hailed as “super breeders” after producing 55 chicks in just two years, helping pull their species back from the brink. Their offspring alone account for more than 10% of the world’s remaining kākāriki karaka, or orange‑fronted parakeets, a native bird once declared extinct twice and now down to roughly 450 individuals in the wild and captivity combined.

The pair live at the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in Christchurch, where conservationists run intensive breeding programs and create predator‑free sanctuaries to protect the birds from threats like rats and stoats. Staff say Nacho and Trixie “chose each other” after several compatible birds were put together and allowed to form their own pairs, a strategy that seems to have resulted in a particularly successful match.

While most breeding pairs in the program produce between 10 and 15 chicks per season, Nacho and Trixie have far exceeded expectations, hatching 33 chicks in the most recent breeding season alone. Wildlife managers describe the duo as “quite relaxed” birds whose calm temperament and strong bond may be part of their success.

Conservationists emphasize that the kākāriki karaka is still one of New Zealand’s rarest birds and remains highly vulnerable to predators and habitat loss. But they say the story of Nacho and Trixie shows how targeted breeding, careful pair selection and ongoing habitat protection can give even the most endangered species a fighting chance.
