Somebody calls a 265/70R18 a 33 about twice a week around here. It is a 32.6. That four-tenths of an inch does not matter until you are working to a clearance number, and then it is the only thing that matters.

Here is the bigger one. This size comes in three versions. P-metric, Euro-metric, and LT Load Range E. They all stand 32.6 inches tall and they are not the same tire. Between the lightest and the heaviest there is over 900 pounds of load capacity per corner, and P-metric tires get derated again the moment you bolt them to a truck.

225/60R18 by itself is only three-quarters of a tire size. The load index and speed rating stamped right after it run from 99 to 104 and from T to W in this size. That is a 275 lb swing in capacity per corner and a 50 mph swing in speed capability between two tires wearing the same three numbers.

Five different tire manufacturers build an EV-specific tire in 215/50R17. That is not an accident.

Bolt EV, Bolt EUV, Volt, Insight, Accord Hybrid all wear this size, and every one of them carries a few hundred pounds more battery than the gas car it shares a footprint with. Heavier. Instant torque off the line. No engine noise to cover for a loud tire.

Put a grippy performance all-season under that and you pay for it in range and tread life. Most "best of" lists for this size never mention it.

Here is the thing almost every "best 215/45R17 tires" list leaves out: this size does not ship in one specification.

About 47% of the cars that came on 215/45R17 from the factory need load index 87. About 38% need 91. That gap is 155 pounds of rated capacity per corner, and no amount of tire quality makes up for a number that is too small.

Open your driver's door. Read the placard. Then pick the tire.

What the size lists leave out is the rim width range. A tire's approved rim runs about 70 to 90 percent of its section width, which puts a 12.50-inch tire on an 8.75 to 11.25-inch rim. On a 14 you are nearly three inches past the top of that.

Only the 15.50-wide flotation sizes land in spec on a 14, and they sit right at the ceiling.

8x200 is a short list: Ford F-350 duallies from 2005 up, the F-450 pickup for a few years, and Ram 3500 duallies from 2019 up. That part is easy to look up.

The part that actually costs people money is that a bolt circle is not a fitment. Every 8x200 truck also needs a 142mm hub bore, and dually front and rear wheels are separate parts with offsets that differ by nearly 400mm. Order four identical 8x200 wheels for a dually and you get a set that will not assemble.

And GM's 3500HD dually sits 10mm away at 8x210. On a 200mm circle that is five percent, close enough that a lug nut will start to thread and feel like it is going somewhere.

Hank has had this conversation across the counter a few hundred times. Somebody wants 14s back on the car because the ride is better and the wheel looks right. Then we measure the front brakes and the conversation ends.

The rule is simple: a wheel needs to be about four inches larger than the brake rotor. That caps a 14 at roughly a 10 inch rotor, which is a 1970s brake package. Anything with factory four-wheel discs built since the early 90s will not clear it, and no wheel design gets around that.

Here is the part that surprises people. Two thirds of the 14 inch wheels in production today are not car wheels at all. They run ATV and UTV bolt circles. The category moved off the highway.

Asking "which 245/45R19 tire is the best?" gets you a single name from most sources. The problem is that this size ships in two different load ratings, and your car was built for exactly one of them.

About 69 percent of 245/45R19 tires are XL at load index 102, rated for 1,874 lbs. The other 31 percent are Standard Load at 98, rated for 1,653 lbs. That is 221 lbs of missing capacity per corner if you get it backwards, and no amount of air pressure closes the gap.

Somebody asks me for the best 225/60R17 tire about once a day, and I always ask the same question back: sedan or crossover?

Same three numbers go on a Crown Victoria and on a Hyundai Tucson. On a minivan and on a base V6 Mustang. Those cars want different things, which is why the size gets built in load ratings from 98 all the way to 103. Between a 99 and a 103 there is 220 pounds of capacity at every corner. That is 880 pounds across the car.

We wrote up the whole size. Best for mileage, best for snow, best for crossovers, best under 150 dollars, plus honest answers on whether you can swap to 225/55 or 225/65 (short version: both are 3.2 percent off, and one of them makes your speedometer lie in the dangerous direction).

Everybody wants to know which 245/40R19 is the best rated tire. Almost nobody checks the thing that actually decides it first.

This size ships in two different load ratings, 94 and 98. That is a 176 pound difference at every corner, 704 pounds across the car. If your door placard says 98 and you buy a 94, it does not matter how many stars the tire has. You bought the wrong tire.
