That’s a wrap! Massengale’s Furniture and Oklahoma Recumbent Trikes & Bikes has officially closed our doors (as of this Tuesday) where the building will be sold to its new owners.
It’s been 48 years years since my dad opened Massengale’s Furniture & Appliance Store. Bob’s brother, Clifford Leroy Massengale sold Bob the business on Dec 31, 1976 and on Jan 1st, 1977 they both cosigned a letter documenting the transaction.
It’s been 48 years total that the business was run by my dad. The first 29 years the business was solely for selling furniture & appliances. In 2006, Bob opened Oklahoma Recumbent Trikes & Bikes where his passion for recumbent bike riding blossomed. This business originally was started in the building next door to the furniture store. I remember my family and Pastor Rusty came down to bless this business and it flourished from there.
At first, Bob ran both businesses out of each building. He used a camera system which would show him if a customer came into either building where he would promptly go meet with them. Eventually, he sold off all the furniture and moved the bike shop into the furniture store building.
Some of my favorite memories were playing hide & seek among all the bedroom furniture sets that were upstairs on the 2nd floor. We also liked to try out every single piece of recliner or couch there was.
I also remember rocking my baby sister, Kasi, to sleep on the floor near the office. I was five years old and that’s when I knew I wanted to be a mommy when I grew up.
I was two years old in 1977 and now at age 50 it truly has been a 48 year legacy.
My father wanted to work until the day he died and he truly did work until the day that he no longer could.
Please pray and send well wishes for my dad as he is in a nursing home with dementia. He truly is the man, the myth and the legend that we’ve always thought he was.
We want to thank all of our customers and supporters throughout these years! Vendors, staff, and friends. It truly was a blessing to serve you all!
