EDIT - The issue here is the use of “Max Break Strength” instead of “Minimum Break Strength.” That may sound minor, but it isn’t. Some of this company’s products are labeled “minimum” and some “max,” which creates dangerous inconsistency.
Here’s why it matters: Minimum Break Strength tells you the lowest force at which that piece of gear failed in testing. That gives you a baseline to build your safety margins around. Max Break Strength tells you the highest force one sample survived before failure. That’s not a baseline. That’s a best-case scenario.
It’s the difference between saying:
“I can guarantee this bridge will hold at least 20,000 lbs.”
and
“One of our bridges held 20,000 lbs once.”
Those are not the same thing.
In recovery, we don’t build around best-case. We build around worst-case. Because when a winch line loads hard, angles change, weight shifts, and kinetic energy stack up fast. If your gear fails below what you thought it would, people get hurt.
The bigger problem is this kind of inconsistency still exists in the off-road industry. There’s no governing body regulating how recovery gear is tested, rated, or labeled. That leaves companies to police themselves, and when profit gets prioritized over clarity, the consumer carries the risk.
Some of these issues have been raised before. Some labels get corrected. Others stay on shelves exactly as they are. That should concern everyone.
Specs aren’t just numbers. They’re trust. And trust is what keeps people safe.
