Hi everyone!
Times are tough, we get it. For the coming months, through the holidays and into winter, our day-old bread will be available for free, no questions asked. Organizations, nonprofits, community members, patrons, anyone at all, are welcome to take as much as you need. It's first come, first served, and availability may vary from day to day.
When we first opened, we used to bring our bread to some area shelters, but with ongoing staff shortages, driving around town to distribute it has become too difficult logistically. This way, it can still get to the people who need it.
It was my mother's birthday last night, and we got takeout from Jade Garden. It was great, and of course I couldn't help myself with the fortune cookie. It said something along the lines of "use what you have and give," and oddly enough, it really spoke to me. I never thought I'd make a business decision based on a fortune cookie, but maybe this is less about business and more about filling a need. Bread has always been at the heart of community. We "break bread" with the people we care about, and in the New Testament, a few loaves and fish, shared by people who simply used what they had, ended up feeding a whole crowd.
For centuries, bread has done more than nourish people, it has brought them together. I hope this speaks to others, and helps all of us move through our community with a little more compassion and empathy for our neighbors, and face the colder months ahead with some sense of warmth.
From our family to yours.
