Heads up! Two Free Fishing Days are happening this weekend, June 6-7. 🎣

On these days, Indiana residents can fish the state’s public waters without a fishing license and trout/salmon stamp. All other rules, such as seasons, bag limits, and size limits, apply.

⚡️🪰PEAK lightning bug season is arriving! 🙌🏼
They first arrived early this year due to the warmer and wet spring we had, especially in central and southern Indiana.

But expect the biggest numbers starting now!

Typically peak season for lightning bugs is June in Indiana, but because of the earlier onset, peak season should be early and mid June. You'll probably notice numbers decrease the second half of June from south to north gradually.

WHY THE LIGHTS?
They are mating and they use their lights to attract other lightning bugs of the same species. The lights hopefully warn off predators too.

Tips on how to get more lightning bugs where you live:
▪️Cut grass higher, and leave unmowed areas if you can
▪️No pesticides
▪️Turn off unnecessary lights outside

These hands-on sessions are great for total beginners or those looking to learn about new species and techniques.

Each workshop includes a 60–90-minute presentation plus practical, hands-on learning with experienced instructors. This year's topics include Waterfowl Hunting, Deer Hunting, Squirrel Hunting, Basic Fishing, Bass Fishing, Catfish Fishing, and more!

The 80th Mermaid Festival will be here before we know it! The Mermaid Festival Theme is the 80's to celebrate the 80th year of the Festival. Registration forms for the Cutie Parade and Pageant are now available on the website. The Queen of Lakes Registration Forms are also available. The Cutie registration forms can now be submitted electronically, or you can print and mail as in the past. Queen of Lakes Registration forms are now available as a fillable PDF. The Mermaid Festival 2026 will start on Wednesday June 17th with the Cutie Parade; The Cutie Pageant will be held on Friday the 19th and QOL Pageant will be held on Saturday the 20th in conjunction with the Mermaid Festival Parade. We are on the upswing when it comes to daylight, gaining 2-2.5+ minutes EACH DAY between now and the end of February. If fact, beginning tomorrow, sunrise is officially pre-8am EST! BABY STEPS, BABY! Spring is inching closer!!! If you're in central time zone, subtract an hour from these numbers.
