It's Facebook official.

The LS9 is now finally, officially, completely done and gone. In something that was no surprise (like watching the slowest train wreck happen in history), the remaining inventory of the service longblock finally ticked down to zero. The LS9 joins the ranks of other discontinued yet iconic crate engines such as the LT5, LSA, LS7, and what started it all for us, the LS1.

With the Chevrolet Performance crate being pulled from the lineup in 2019, and then the supercharger in 2022, the large swath of LS9 service longblocks were going to be a hard sell with the unique flywheel bolt pattern and without that 2.3L blower sitting on top like a tiara of forced induction. Even without a core charge on that service longblock it still took time for the numbers to dwindle.

The LS9 came along in the C6 ZR1 with the bold statement of "America still builds rockets." A monster on the street and track with only the most skilled and steely-eyed drivers being able to really grab that car by the scruff of the neck and get everything out of it.

From the street, to the track, to the show circuit, customers with deep enough pockets ordered the LS9 crate engine because it was a dead on performer with enough power to garner respect wherever it went (usually trailing a cloud of tire smoke).

So is it really gone? Yes. At least in this form. GM has resurrected the LSx lineup with the Grand Sport reveal bringing us the 409cid LS6 Gen VI small block. Being the third time around that the LS engine code has been used, we will more than likely see an LS9 in the Gen VI architecture. I guess only time will tell. Story from Scoggin Dickey Parts Center
