How often should you actually change these parts?

Spark plugs, engine oil, air filter, brake pads, AC filter, coolant, oil filter: the intervals aren't always what people assume, and skipping them is how small maintenance turns into bigger repairs.

Save this as your maintenance cheat sheet, and check with your mechanic if you're not sure where you stand on any of these.

Not everything on your estimate needs to happen today.

A good shop breaks down what's urgent, what can wait a few months, and what's just worth keeping an eye on, instead of telling you it all "needs" to get done right now.

You should always leave understanding why a repair matters, not just that it's on the list. If you walk out more confused than when you walked in, that's a sign to find a different shop.

What are your brakes trying to tell you?

Squealing or grinding when you brake, vibration or pulsing in the pedal, and your car pulling to one side when you stop are all signs it's time for an inspection.

Don't wait on these. A brake job today is a lot cheaper than a rotor and caliper replacement next month.

How old is your car battery?

In Las Vegas heat, batteries don't get a warning before they die. They just go. Extreme heat breaks down the internal components faster than cold ever will, so a battery that should last 5 years might only make it 2 or 3 out here.

If yours is three years or older, get it tested. It takes five minutes and it's usually free, and it can save you from getting stranded in 110 degree heat. Ignore it, and a weak battery can also strain your alternator, turning a simple fix into a much bigger bill.
