GILLIG is helping electric transit move forward in some of the country’s most demanding operating environments.

The Duluth Transit Authority recently placed two new 40-foot GILLIG Battery Electric Buses into service. Designed to operate for 16 or more hours before charging, they offer quieter, smoother rides and strong performance across Duluth’s steep routes and winter climate.

Building on DTA’s electric-bus experience since 2018, this deployment demonstrates how zero-emission technology continues to evolve to meet the everyday demands of public transportation.

What's the difference between a qualified and a certified CNG fuel system inspector?

A qualified inspector has been deemed capable based on internal training, work experience, and employer judgment.

A certified inspector has demonstrated their competency through an independent assessment.

In other words...

Training asks, “Has the technician been exposed to the material?”

Certification asks, “Can the technician apply that material correctly in real-world situations?”

A compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinder that has reached the end of its service life or sustains Level 3 damage and has been removed from a vehicle can still pose a significant hazard if it has not been properly defueled and decommissioned.

It’s an unfortunate misconception that a cylinder is safe simply because it is no longer in use, but the reality is that technicians, fleet personnel, recyclers, or scrap processors could be harmed by a discarded cylinder that still has residual natural gas and pressure.

A recent project from the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) continues to draw attention across the alternative fuels industry.

Through a partnership with OPAL Fuels and South Jersey Industries, ACUA has been converting landfill gas into renewable natural gas (RNG) at its facility in Egg Harbor Township. This captured methane is then processed into pipeline-quality natural gas that the public authority can use for its own fleet.

Projects like this are a meaningful step forward in supporting long-term energy infrastructure — not to mention creating a more sustainable fuel source for utilities like ACUA, which runs over 50 percent of its vehicles on natural gas.

Not necessarily.

In the natural gas vehicle industry, the terms "qualified" and "certified" may be used interchangeably, but they represent two very different levels of validation.

Training builds knowledge. Certification verifies the ability to apply that knowledge correctly.

When people hear the term "hydrogen" in relation to fuel, some think about safety concerns. (Remember the Hindenburg?)

While gaseous fuels have a long history in transportation, public perception can lag.

When you're on a construction site deep in the dirt, waiting for batteries to charge isn't a realistic option.

We asked Steve Duricky, Global Platform Manager with Parker Hannifin, why hydrogen stands out compared to other alternative fuels.

His answer? Refueling speed.

While electric vehicles need time to charge, hydrogen can be delivered and refueled just as quickly as diesel — right there on-site. That’s a big deal for heavy industry where timing is critical.

True sustainability in the toughest environments hinges on practical solutions that keep the work going.
