🚨 Your turbo doesn’t have rubber “seals” holding the oil in.
One of the biggest misconceptions about turbochargers is that oil is kept inside by seals like you’d find in an engine.
It’s not.
Most journal-bearing turbos use piston-ring-style sealing rings. Their job is largely to control gas flow and help prevent exhaust gases from entering the center housing and contaminating the oil — they’re NOT rubber seals designed to hold back pressurized oil.
Oil enters the turbo under pressure, lubricates and cools the bearings, then needs to drain freely out the bottom of the center housing through the oil drain line BY GRAVITY.
That’s why a restricted drain, incorrect drain angle, excessive crankcase pressure, or other installation/engine issues can cause a perfectly good turbo to push oil.
So before you diagnose a smoking turbo as having “blown seals”… understand how the oiling system actually works. 🔧💨
