We use our ears like avg people daily, but in our profession we do have to train them, and understand what to listen for in playback music. Home audio in a 2.1 setting is a real good reference for music. There isn't any noise from the road, or air or rain. It goes the same for professional headphones as well, since they are just left and right. We use certain test tracks for tuning car audio systems. It is always best to hear that before we get in a vehicle for testing. This allows for us to know how it is supposed to sound, so when we get in the vehicle and that sound isn't the same, well we have more work to do. Using a handful of test tracks, we listen to these all the time so we know how it sounds and if anything isn't being reproduced like normal. Every amplified audio system need to be tuned properly, it takes about an hour an can be done same day up to 1pm.
