Be extra careful out there this weekend, and don’t forget to pack your emergency kit in your vehicle if you’re out on the road!

Looking ahead to this weekend, the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) issued a wind chill watch in effect for Northern New York, with dangerously cold wind chills as low as -30 to -40°F possible. Daytime temperatures on High Peak summits are forecast as low as -35°F with wind chill. DEC Forest Rangers recommend avoiding the High Peaks this weekend and making alternate plans to avoid extreme conditions—the mountains will still be there next weekend!

Check the Backcountry Information webpages and today's Adirondack Outdoor Recreation Bulletin for more regional notices and tips for planning and preparing for cold weather outdoor adventures: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7865.html.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like January out there.

As the temperatures drop well below zero each year, we often see a sharp uptick in calls for diesel vehicles that won’t start. While the issue often appears to be a simple dead battery, many times it turns out to be a case of gelled up fuel (ESPECIALLY if the fuel in the tank was purchased farther south).

Check out the article below for some tips on how to avoid this issue, and feel free to give us a ring if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having a cold diesel that refuses to start- we’ve got plenty of experience.
