Weekly Notes (Week 7):
A dozen events were scheduled for the seventh week of competition, and 50 percent of those races were rained out as Mother Nature continues to smack local racing events… There have been 168 different drivers who have raced in a sanctioned event thus far during the ’23 season, which was an increase of 30 competitors from last week… A total of 20 different competitors have reached victory lane this season during the first seven weeks of a 27-event campaign that counts a driver’s best 14 finishes towards the highly-competitive division’s national championship… Cerulean, Ky., driver Mike Neighbors added his name to the multiple-win list with a victory at high-banked Paducah International Raceway, and moved into the top five in the national points standings… Four different events at 10 different facilities are scheduled for the eighth week of a 27-race season that counts a driver’s best 14 finishes towards the championship… Heading into the eighth week of competition, just four events at four different tracks in two states are on the slate… Windy Hollow Speedway in Owensboro, Ky., has plans to widen its corners and put up inside barrier stakes before a Kentucky Top Dog Street Stock Series event scheduled Sun., May 28. Three tracks will participate during the Memorial Day weekend trio of events, including Fri., May 26 at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway and Sat., May 27 at Western Kentucky Speedway. All three events will pay $2,000 to win, and there’s an overall championship points prize after the three races that awards another $2,000 and pays through fifth place in the weekend standings… Shane Taylor participated in the unsanctioned $10,000-to-win Ultimate Street Stock Showdown held May 13 at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C., and was driving the sixth-fastest car in practice aboard his topless machine at the 3/8-mile oval. Unfortunately, Taylor suffered motor issues. He got those fixed, but the difficulties put him behind and the team didn’t want to chance additional issues. They headed home to Trenton, Fla., but made a stop at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga., where the CRUSA Street Stock division had a $1,000-to-win feature scheduled on the night’s program that was headlined by the $10,000-to-win Gene Maine Memorial for 604 Late Model-style cars. Allowed to run without a roof after an unexpected and unplanned side trip to the Chance Smith-promoted oval, Taylor salvaged the weekend with a victory. “We went there just to try and get the car better, and to dial it in a little more with some adjustments,” Taylor said. “We had our engine problems fixed, but we were already way behind in the program at Cherokee, and felt it was too much to overcome. Fortunately we arrived at Needmore in time to race, and secured a win.”
