I used to ride my Motorcycle all over the place. I was even a patched member of a MC. Then a few years ago I was dispatched to a wreck. A 70+ yr old man from out of town was killed when he slid on sand and was hit by a truck on the highway. It was a bad scene. The family had to come get his belongings and wanted his bike. I had to clean “him” off the bike before they arrived. Next time I rode, I noticed I was doing 40 in a 55. My paranoia was making myself a danger to myself. So I parked it and walked away from the life I loved . It took all this time to finally get over that mental block. Tow truck operators are greatly affected by what we see. Yes, it’s our job, but we’re human. Every cross we pass on the highway, we relive that day in our minds. Tow ops need mental wellness plans and resources that other responders have. Take care of your mental selves tow ops, because it does stick with us. Stay safe out there and take care of yourself.
