Two numbers decide whether your truck-and-trailer rig crosses the CDL line: the GVWR on your truck's door-jamb sticker, and the GVWR on the trailer's tongue plate. Add them.

• Personal use: a regular Class E license covers any trailer your truck is rated to pull.
• Hauling for business, the federal Class A line is a combination of 26,001 lb or more where the trailer alone is rated over 10,000 lb. Both have to be true.
• Example from our buyer's guide: a three-quarter-ton rated 10,000 lb plus a 14,000 lb trailer is 24,000 lb. That's under the Class A line.
