“It’s only worth what someone is willing to pay you for it”. How many times have we all heard this old adage? But it is about as close to the textbook definition of a Fair Market Value as we can get when explaining in simple terms. Sometimes though we run into certain situations where a number needs to be written down and have justification behind how that number was reached. Here in lies the Certified Fair Market Auto Appraisal. Let’s look at when this may be necessary.
- BUYING/SELLING/TRADING: Many lending institutions now require a Fair Market report before they are willing to finance cars. I see this to be very common among Classics and Exotics and Specialty Vehicles of all kinds. When selling, sometimes people are not sure of what to ask, especially if a car was left to them in a will by a relative or going through dad’s collection that sat in the barn for 30 years. In a volatile market, make sure you know the value of your trade-in before heading to the dealership.

- BANKRUPTCY/DIVORCE/ESTATE/DISPUTE: Many times, courts will require a Fair Market analysis of cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, ATVs, etc… all in an effort to reach a fair settlement if legal matters should arise. They may also call the appraiser to testify under oath, maintaining the claims made in the appraisal report.

I received a phone call from a lawyer who was representing a lady whose father had just passed away. In her father's will, he had left her with his classic car collection that included 56 Classics Cars such as 3 - 1957 Bel Air Convertibles, a 1964 Impala Convertible 409CID, a 1972 Chevelle resto-mod and so many more awesome classics. Being that she knew nothing about classic cars, she wanted to make sure she knew the value of each and every car in the collection. I went to work and within a couple of weeks, we had a complete set of reports put together documenting each and every car, verified titles, and assigned Fair Market Values to each one. My very first Muscle Car was a 1969 Dodge Charger, I have always been partial to the Mopar Muscle Cars. So when I get a call to go and inspect a Numbers Matching, original 1970 AAR Cuda, I am like a kid in a candy store!

This was a beautiful example of such a cool car. I was able to verify the claims that it was numbers matching and also was able to document the originality and condition of the vehicle for the potential buyer. This particular AAR Cuda was equipped with the Factory original, numbers matching 340CID Six-Pack engine, correct numbers matching 4-speed manual transmission with pistol grip shifter, and restored to its factory original FE5, Rallye Red paint color. This was a concourse-grade restoration, the kind of car kids like me drool over.

Car guys and gals are a different breed. Some say we are crazy; some just can’t understand why we continually punish ourselves and some will probably never understand why we do what we do. If you are a gearhead, you have probably taken on projects that have gotten out of control. We have all said that famous phrase, “As long I am this far, I might as well...” resulting in a simple afternoon project becoming a complete restoration project. I know I am personally guilty of it.

I recently was commissioned by a buyer from Nevada to inspect a 1965 Mustang Fastback that was for sale in Naples, FL. The builder of the car took this car from nothing, and built an incredible machine... in record time! As per the builder, he built this car in a record-setting 3 months! INCREDIBLE!

For the drivetrain, he kept it simple with a 302CID and C4 Trans. The interior is beautifully done with power and leather bucket seats salvaged from a 2019 Mustang. He painstakingly went thru the wiring to make sure even the lumbar and power seats functioned properly. The column-mounted Rally-Pac was sourced and presented in a factory-like manner. The car actually has that “new car” smell when you open the door.

I was blown away that he built this car in such a short time frame and turned out such a nice, well-built example of a ’65 Mustang Fastback. Someday I hope to have the time to take on a build like this, although I am not sure I could do it at the pace he set down with this one.

Here is a perfect example of "1 person's junk is another man's treasure"

Here we have a 1954 Ford F100 that was restored from top to bottom, upgraded to a modern drivetrain with modern conveniences, and finished in beautiful, deep red paint. The potential buyer of this truck contacted me to inspect and make sure this truck was going to check off all the boxes on the list he had. He gave me a list of concerns and a list of the dealbreakers for him.

I went to work, I inspected and I test drove, I took 191 pictures and roughly 40 minutes of video showing The Good, The Bad, and the "not so" Ugly on this truck.

After I finished the inspection, I uploaded the pics and video to the cloud and sent them to him for review, and as always, before even leaving the site of the inspection, I called him to discuss the results of the inspection so that he had immediate knowledge of everything found. We had a good 20-minute conversation and decided that while this truck checked many of the "must have" boxes on his list, there were a couple of "dealbreakers" checked as well and he decided to pass. The complete Certified Inspection Report including a Fair Market Valuation went out to the customer that evening.

The owner of this 2017 Toyota Tacoma contacted me after getting hit HARD by another driver. So hard that it "horse-shoed" the frame of this pickup.

The insurance company came in with an offer that was UNACCEPTABLE and this Tacoma owner was not going to stand for it. After inspecting the truck I was in agreement that the truck was a Total Loss, however, I could not wrap my head around the value that the insurance company had put on the truck at $24,949.92 This Mitchell Value Report that was prepared for Progressive stood to line the pockets of the insurance company and not recoup the loss that the vehicle owner suffered.

It only took 1 phone call with the insurance-appointed appraiser to get them to see things my way and we settled on a fair value of $32,000, putting over $7k back into this Tacoma owner's pocket!! (minus deductible)

The potential buyer of this 1968 Camaro called me and stated he was looking for a good clean, solid '68 Camaro to begin a Resto-Mod build. He needed a solid car to start with so he could begin the process of transforming the car into a machine that maintained the classic look but had the functionality and reliability of a modern car.

We had looked at a couple of potential cars locally hoping to find one that suited his vision but came up empty-handed. He found this car all the way up in North Carolina and asked if I would be willing to travel that far to inspect it for him. To which I replied "ABSOLUTELY!!"

The seller advertised this as a Clean, Solid, driver-quality car that needed nothing but a new owner. I guess he didn't anticipate some people doing their due diligence and having a car like this inspected before purchasing. I was only on-site for a few minutes before I started to realize that things were not adding up. After laying on the ground and looking at the frame and undercarriage, I shook the seller's hand and told him "good luck".

This car was a big pile of swiss cheese. The floors were completely rotted out. On Gen 1 and Gen 2 F-Bodys, (𝐹-𝐵𝑜𝑑𝑦 = 𝐶ℎ𝑒𝑣𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝐶𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑜'𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑐 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝐴𝑚'𝑠/ 𝐺𝑒𝑛 𝟣 = 𝟣𝟫𝟨𝟩 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑢 𝟣𝟫𝟨𝟫 / 𝐺𝑒𝑛 𝟤 = 𝟣𝟫𝟩𝟢 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑢 𝟣𝟫𝟪𝟣) the majority of the structure in these cars come from the floor as they are what is known as "sub-frame" or "uni-body" cars. We all love to watch the Classic Car auctions on TV and most of us have this belief that all those cars that cross the block on TV are in CONCOURSE, EXCELLENT Condition. The reality is quite the opposite in many cases. Cars that are advertised as "Numbers Matching" have no identifiable numbers present at the time of inspection. Cars that are advertised as "All Original" have body filler/Bondo hiding under the paint. The list could go on and on.

So how do you protect yourself when buying in the Auction Format? Get a Pre- Purchase Inspection.
