After missing two Sailfish that cleaned out two and three baits each without catching a hook yesterday morning, our frustration was mounted fishing on board the INXS out of Key West.
Hoping to find something floating out there that might've had some mahi on it for this young man fishing with his parents. We found some birds that were over top of some tuna, but still did not manage to get a bite. We went a little deeper, got into some surface scattered grass than it happened. In about 780 ft S of Key West this beautiful Marlin violently smashed our Short Bait and put on one hell of a show with many many jumps and almost burning down our 20 international. After the adrenaline set in and the fish started to mellow out just a little bit we managed to get a lot of our line back then the fight was on! It was a team effort with dad and son taking turns in the chair putting the load against her. The fight lasting over an hour before she came alongside, thats when I was able to come downstairs while Garret held her secure to remove the hook and revive her to a safe release.
What a thrill for this dad and son team catching their first Marlin. A perfect mount size for the wall back home for these folks done by Grays Taxidermy.
Tis The Season for fishing out of Key West.. As the Gulf Stream starts to straighten out we will be in the fish on the daily. Our large mahi will be in larger numbers.

Floaters (junk floating in the water) can really make a day when deep-sea fishing. They all have potential some more than others. Location in the current is important. The amount of bait underneath is certainly important. How long it has been floating and how deep the floater may go is also a key feature. This particular one was a tree branch that was only showing what you see here but went down about 9 to 10 feet wrapped up in all those buoys on the surface that made it easy to see out in 700 feet of water off of Key West. Our first pass by this we hooked up on a wahoo with one Bait and got cut off on another. On another pass, we compounded on our wahoo and also put some mahi in the box.
A great find in the first week of April this year right around the full moon. Having a tuna tower on board, the INXS is certainly a huge advantage for finding these targets and catching fish also being able to see further down in the water. In addition, our SigSauer 18 power stabilized binoculars add to our advantage. It's not uncommon for it to take us 20 minutes to troll to a floating target that we see through these glasses.

Last Monday with westbound currents they were eddies off of the Gulf Stream we managed into a couple of different floaters that held some fish like this mahi. The tuna tower on the INXS sure makes it better for finding fish or structure that is floating. Not to mention our optics with 18 Power SigSauer stabilizing binoculars.
