WHY IS MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON?
This is one of the most common questions we hear. The check engine light can come on for many different reasons. The check engine light can come on for many different reasons.
It could be something small, like a loose gas cap. It could also be caused by:
• Worn spark plugs
• Bad ignition coils
• An engine misfire
• A fuel problem
• An air leak
• A sensor problem
• A wiring problem
• A catalytic converter problem
That is why we do not like to guess. When the check engine light comes on, the car's computer stores a trouble code. But the code does NOT always tell us what part is bad.
Think of the code like a ZIP code. It can tell us what system has the problem, but it cannot tell us the exact part that is bad. The diagnostic testing helps us find the “house” where the problem is. That is how we find out what is really wrong before replacing parts.
There is also something very important to know about the light itself.
🟡 SOLID CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
A solid light means the car has found a problem.
The car may still seem to drive fine, but you should have it checked.
🔴 FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
A flashing light is more serious. It can mean the engine is misfiring.
If your car is shaking, losing power, or running badly, you should stop driving it.
Driving with a bad misfire can damage other parts and make the repair more expensive.
