Louisiana summer may put your cooling system to the test, but its job doesn’t end when fall arrives.

Coolant circulates through the engine to absorb heat and help keep it operating at the right temperature every time you drive. Hoses, the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and other components all work together to move that heat away from the engine.

When coolant gets low, a leak develops, or part of the system isn’t working properly, the engine can run too hot. Overheating can quickly turn into much more serious engine damage.

That’s why your cooling system belongs on the Fall Car Care Month checklist, even after the hottest days are behind us.

That warning light on your dash is telling you something, but it isn’t telling you which part to replace.

A check engine light, for example, means your vehicle’s computer detected something outside its normal operating range. Belts and hoses may not be the first things you think about when it comes to keeping your vehicle reliable, but they have some pretty important jobs under the hood.

Belts help keep components like the alternator and other accessories operating. Hoses carry coolant and other fluids where they need to go. As these parts age, heat and everyday use can lead to cracks, soft spots, leaks, fraying, or other wear.

The problem is, you may not notice any of that from the driver’s seat until something fails.

Your battery does a lot more than sit under the hood waiting for you to turn the key.

Every time you start your vehicle, the battery has to provide enough power to get the engine going. As it ages, its ability to hold a charge and deliver that power can gradually decrease. You might notice slower starts, dimmer lights, or electrical issues, but sometimes there’s very little warning before the vehicle simply won’t start.

That’s why we’re starting Fall Car Care Month with the battery. Testing it can tell you how it’s performing now, so you have useful information before you find yourself needing a jump in the driveway.
