Be safe everyone, and keep an eye out. Hoping the wind clears out the smoke, but nothing else is eventful.

The National Weather Service has issued a RED FLAG WARNING for Wednesday, August 17th, 2022, 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM

This means that a combination of strong winds (gusts of 30-40 MPH), low relative humidity, and warm temperatures (over 100 degrees) can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Please limit mowing and any outdoor activities that could lead to a spark.

Check your car before driving for any issues that may cause a spark, be careful of driving in or parking on dry grass, and make sure any towing chains are away from the ground.

Stay hydrated in these high temperatures, check on your family and neighbors, and ensure all pets have adequate shade and water!

From CALFIRE Division Chief Paul Duncan, regarding Konocti Lookout tower.

The tower was red tagged due to it being a unsafe structure, 3 years ago. The lookout folks had been working from the ground.

We had money placed into our maintenance budget for another agency to do the foundation and structural engineering. That money is still there.

3 weeks ago, during a visit to the tower by one of our Battalion Chiefs, the tower was found to be opened and occupied by the lookout group. This is completely against our agreement, was trespassing and entering an unsafe area. The lookout folks were removed from the tower.

The tower is closed, however the volunteers are allowed to be on the ground beside the tower to observe for smokes.

The fundraising is appropriate, and will be used once the structure is surveyed and we know what the repairs are that are needed.

The state has no interest in occupying the structure for fire lookout purposes. We have 6 cameras that work 24-hours per day.

If someone falls from that tower, they will perish. It’s 50’ off the ground.

Question: Will the tower eventually be repaired?

Answer: Likely not by CALFIRE. We don’t need it. The survey will determine the future of the structure and the cost to repair.

Once we (the community) find out the cost, we can better conduct fundraising for the repair then the volunteers will be free to be up there.

⚡ Did you know that lighting can strike up to 10 miles away from a storm? Lightning that strikes outside of the precipitation area could lead to fire starts. Make sure you are prepared to evacuate if needed! Report new starts to local officials and obey evacuation orders.

Update 8/3: we have obtained further information indicating this flyer is a bit misleading. Hoping for more official information to come out in the next couple days.

This is a very important resource for early detection of fires in our area. They have been first to report several fires. Without their reports, it’s possible these fires could have become much larger. Please consider contacting the people below to get our volunteers back on the mountain.

Edited to add, this is in no way a reflection on our local firefighters. We ❤️ our heroes! 🚒 🚑
