Many engines from the 60s, 70s, and early 80s were designed for oils that contained higher levels of ZDDP (zinc) — an additive that protects flat-tappet camshafts and internal engine parts.
Modern oils removed much of that zinc to protect catalytic converters in newer vehicles.
For some classic engines, the wrong oil can lead to:
🔧 Accelerated camshaft wear
🔧 Premature lifter failure
🔧 Reduced engine life over time
That doesn’t mean your classic needs exotic oil — it just means it needs the right oil for the engine it was built with.
