My eldest son’s graduation was this month on the 11th. I prebooked a flight with Frontier Airlines, scheduled to board early that morning and return later that evening. Initially, I couldn't leave any earlier because of complications with my mom's health. Adding to the drama, our Central Air ceased cooling our house the day before my flight during 92-plus-degree weather in our city. Arriving on time for the flight, finding that they boarded early, the plane doors were shut. I, with roughly 11 others, spoke with a supervisor who would only offer to rebook us, along with a $100.00 additional fee, which I quickly paid. I missed the experience of witnessing my eldest son walking across that platform and receiving his college degree. Upon arriving at the Vegas airport, I had to accept that there was no time to fellowship with my son. I find a cab, give him $100.00 to take me to where my son is, and bring me back to the airport. An 18-minute visit costs nearly $1000.00. I wrote this to express how grateful I am for seeing my son that day. Life is precious and short. Do not allow any obstacles to prevent you from completing what is most important to you. He completed his military service and separated as a sergeant. He earned his Bachelors and begins Law School in August. I am honored and proud of him. Hopefully one day he will undergo the experience of loving someone greater than any obstacles that may appear.

One of my heroes and role models for life!

Eugene Bullard was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1895, the seventh child of a Black father and a Native American mother. By his teens, tired of racial discrimination and having witnessed his father's near lynching, he stowed away on a ship bound for Europe, where he settled in Paris and became a boxer.

When World War I began, shortly after in 1914, Eugene volunteered for the French Army. He became a machine gunner, fighting in battles for nearly two years until he was seriously wounded in 1916. After recovering, Eugene earned a pilot's license and became a pilot. He joined the French Air Service, making him the first African-American military pilot and one of the few Black combat pilots during World War I.

After the war, Eugene played in a jazz band, owned a nightclub, owned a sports club, married, and had children in France. But as tensions arose in the 1930s, he was recruited to spy on German patrons at his nightclub, as he was also fluent in German. And when the battles of World War II began, Eugene once again served in combat as a machine gunner until he was wounded.

In 1940, he moved back to the U.S., where he lived until he passed away in 1961.
