Feature Friday spotlight: Lexus LS 400

This is not just a luxury sedan. This is the car that forced the entire luxury industry to rethink what quality actually means.

When Lexus LS 400 launched in 1989, it came in swinging at the biggest names in the world and quietly outclassed them in refinement, reliability, and engineering focus.

Why it matters

-It helped launch the Lexus brand as Toyota’s luxury division
-It was built after years of extreme testing focused on silence, smoothness, and durability
-It introduced a legendary V8 designed for long term reliability and ultra smooth power delivery
-It shocked competitors like Mercedes Benz and BMW with its quality control standards
-It proved a luxury car could be both comfortable and nearly bulletproof mechanically

Cool facts that still impress today

-Engineers obsessed over reducing vibration and noise at every level of the car
-The interior fit and finish was considered ahead of its time for the segment
-It was engineered with long distance comfort as a top priority, not just performance numbers
-Many original examples are still on the road today with high mileage and minimal issues

Why enthusiasts still talk about it

It is the definition of quiet excellence. No drama, just precision, comfort, and longevity that forced the rest of the industry to catch up.

If you know, you know. And if you have driven one, you definitely understand.

🔧 Wrench Wednesday 🔧

Customer concern:

⚠️ Electrical Malfunction
⚠️ Battery Light On
⚠️ Auto Start/Stop Malfunction
⚠️ Steering Malfunction

Sounds expensive, right?

Fortunately, the culprit wasn't a failed steering system, bad battery, or major electrical problem.

It was a shredded serpentine belt.

The serpentine belt drives the alternator, which keeps the battery charged and powers many of the vehicle's electrical systems. Once the belt starts coming apart or slips off, the alternator can no longer do its job properly.

When voltage drops, modern vehicles can light up the dashboard like a Christmas tree with warning messages that may seem completely unrelated.

For this Audi A5, we found the damaged belt, replaced it along with the belt tensioner, and got everything back operating as designed.

The lesson?

Sometimes the dashboard is telling you what's affected, not necessarily what's broken.

A small belt can cause some big complaints.

Wrench Wednesday🔧: when engineers decide the best hiding spot is “just put it in the hatch and confuse everyone later”

Today’s guest: the body control module in an Audi Q3 living under the rear trim like it pays rent back there.

This little brain runs the show for a ton of the car’s everyday stuff. Lights, locks, windows, wipers, and all the “why is this acting weird today” features.

And of course it is not under the dash like a normal human would expect. Nope. Back of the car. Under trim. Behind panels. Where only brave techs and stubborn trim clips go.

Fun fact: it is basically the car’s group chat admin. If something is acting up, there is a decent chance it is in here managing chaos quietly.

Anyway, respect to whoever decided this was a good spot. We see you. We are still pulling the trim.

Throwback Thursday

The car that did things completely differently.

The Mazda RX-7 wasn’t built around a traditional engine. Instead, Mazda went all in on a rotary design, creating one of the most unique sports cars to ever come out of Japan.

Under the hood sat a twin turbo 1.3L rotary engine. Small on paper, but capable of making serious power thanks to its high-revving nature and lightweight design.

No pistons.
No traditional valvetrain.
Just smooth, continuous rotation.

That setup gave the RX-7 near perfect weight balance and a driving feel that was completely different from anything else on the road.

Lightweight, low, and built for handling, this wasn’t about brute force. It was about precision.

Fun fact:
The RX-7’s rotary engine is so compact that it can sit low and far back in the chassis, which is a big reason the car handles so well compared to many of its competitors.

Another one…
The Mazda RX-7 became a global icon thanks to appearances in movies like The Fast and the Furious, helping introduce a whole generation to import performance.

A completely different way to build a sports car… and it worked.

Who’s a rotary fan?

Wrench Wednesday 🔧

Taking a look at the front of this Audi engine

Right here you can see the serpentine belt and tensioner doing their job

This single belt drives multiple components
• Alternator
• Water pump
• Power steering (on some models)
• A/C compressor

That spring loaded tensioner keeps the belt tight at all times so everything spins properly

Over time, belts can wear, crack, or stretch, and tensioners can lose strength. When that happens, you might notice
• Squeaking or chirping noises
• Weak charging or battery issues
• Loss of A/C performance

It is one of those simple maintenance items that plays a big role in how your vehicle runs day to day

In this case, everything is getting checked over to make sure it is tight, aligned, and operating the way it should

Small components, big responsibility

🔧 Tech Tip Tuesday: Why Your Check Engine Light Turns Off by Itself 🔧

A check engine light does not always stay on once it appears. In many cases, the system is monitoring for faults over multiple drive cycles.

If the issue does not repeat, the vehicle may turn the light off on its own after a certain number of successful drive cycles. This does not always mean the problem is gone, only that it has not been detected again.

Intermittent issues like loose connections, sensor irregularities, or temporary conditions can trigger and then clear on their own.

Even if the light turns off, stored fault codes and history can still provide valuable information about what occurred. Clearing the codes removes that information and can make it more difficult to properly diagnose the issue.
