The nurses at Jersey Shore University Medical Center are in contract negotiations. They are not only asking for safe staffing and fair wages, but also raising serious safety concerns.

At the bargaining table yesterday, management claimed there are no safety issues in the hospital. Yet just hours later, while a housekeeper was cleaning and preparing stretchers for patients coming in, a loaded gun fell onto their foot. This is a dangerous reality that cannot be ignored. The bed was going to be used for a psych patient in distress.

They used to have a police officer posted in their Emergency Department from 6 PM to 3 AM. When Hackensack took over, that position was eliminated, and they were told security guards would be enough. This incident makes it clear—they are not.

Safety is not optional. The staff, patients, and community deserve real protections before someone is seriously harmed—not after. Are they waiting for a tragedy before providing the safety measures we’ve been asking for?

We are once again calling for Bob Garrett the CEO of HMH to have enforceable safety parameters and staffing that reflect the risks staff members face every day. Anything less is unacceptable.
