Winter is fast approaching and getting your car ready should be a priority.
The list may seem long but it is worth the time to keep you and your family safe. We love meeting new customers, but never due to a breakdown or accident. BUT if you find yourself in an accident, or on the side of the road with a flat tire or a dead battery, just give C&T Towing a call at 870-340-9196. Our auto repair shop at 17001 Highway 163 Harrisburg can also help you get ready for winter.
Battery and Electrical:
1. Check your battery's charge. Cold temperature cuts the battery capacity and can lead to a car that won't start when you need it.
2. Clean corrosion from terminals and ensure they are tight.
3. Check the alternator is charging and belts are in good working condition.
4. Carry jumper cables or a portable jump starter (NOCO is the brand we use)
5. Replace a battery older than 4 or 5 years before winter
Tires and Traction:
1. Check tire tread depth; winter grip drops sharply on worn tires.
2. Check tire pressure. Cold air lowers them.
3. Check your spare tire for proper inflation. Many people forget to check this and realize too late it is flat.
4. Verify TPMS light is off after adjusting pressures.
Fluids and Cooling:
1. Check antifreeze and ensure the antifreeze mix is for the expected lows.
2. Switch to a winter grade windshield washer fluid that resists freezing.
3. Check engine oil and make sure to change regularly. Consider a winter grade per the owner's manual.
4. Check brake and power steering fluid levels
5. Inspect hoses and belts that may stiffen and crack in the cold.
6. Make sure your heater and defroster are in operating order.
Visibility and Exterior:
1. Replace worn wipers.
2. Test all lights (brake, headlights, and turn signals)
3. Keep an ice scraper or snow brush in your car. Especially if you have to park outside.
Winter emergency kit:
1. Keep a warm blanket, gloves, hat, and extra warm clothing in a bag in your back seat.
2. Carry a small shovel and sand, salt, or traction mats.
3. Carry a flashlight, warning triangle, and reflective vest.
4. Keep water, non-perishable snacks and extra medication in your bag.
5. Pack a first-aid kit and hand warmers.
6. Keep an extra phone charger and power bank fully charged.
Cold Weather Driving Readiness:
1. Keep fuel at least half full to reduce condensation and ensure heat.
2. Clear snow and ice from the roof, windows, and lights before driving.
3. Confirm you have roadside assistance and insurance is current.
4. Use gentle braking and follow at a longer distance on ice.
5. Check weather and road conditions before you leave.
