Winter isn’t the time to discover a tire problem you could have caught in September.

Before colder weather and tougher driving conditions arrive, take a closer look at the casings in your fleet.

A pre-winter casing check should include:

✔ Punctures or injuries that need further evaluation
✔ Previous repairs that should be inspected for condition
✔ Exposed or damaged cords that could affect casing integrity
✔ Inner-liner damage that may point to a larger issue
✔ Signs of underinflation or damage caused by running a tire low

The goal isn’t just to make it through the next route.

Your Most Valuable Tire Asset Isn’t the Tread

Fleets spend a lot of time watching tread depth—and for good reason. But if you're only managing the tread, you're only looking at part of the tire's value.

A commercial tire casing is the structural foundation that remains after the original tread has worn down. When that casing stays in good condition and passes inspection, it may be suitable for retreading rather than requiring the fleet to start over with another new tire. Michelin specifically describes the casing as "one of a commercial tire’s most valuable components and notes that proper inflation, inspections, and timely maintenance can improve its opportunity for future retreading."

Think about the casing underneath it.

A sound commercial tire casing may have the opportunity to be retreaded and returned to service. That means the way a tire is maintained during its first life can affect whether your fleet gets another life out of that investment.

Protecting casing value starts long before the tread is worn out:
✔ Maintain proper inflation for the load and application
✔ Inspect tires regularly for injuries and damage
✔ Address problems before they progress
✔ Properly repair repairable injuries
