By 1973 the muscle car party was basically over. Insurance rates were through the roof, emissions were choking horsepower, and most companies were playing it safe. Buick? They doubled down on style.

The ’73 Riviera was the final chapter of the legendary boattail design, that dramatic tapered rear window inspired by 1930s speedboats. It looked like a custom car Detroit accidentally put into production. And unlike the wild 1971 debut, the ’73 got a cleaner, more refined look with a revised front end and those federally mandated 5 mph bumpers integrated better than most cars of the era.

Under the hood sat Buick’s 455 cubic inch V8, now rated at 250 net horsepower and a mountain-moving 370 lb ft of torque. It was not a high-rev screamer. It was a torque locomotive. Zero to sixty in about eight seconds while riding on a 122 inch wheelbase sofa with optional MaxTrac, one of the first traction control systems in America.

More than 34,000 were built in 1973, making it the best selling boattail year. After this, the Riviera lost the dramatic fastback and went formal. This was the last outrageous Buick before the malaise years truly took over.
