Quick question for collision techs:

A pickup takes a side hit, and both doors and the fender get replaced. The windshield is never touched, and the forward-facing camera never comes out. Does the camera need to be calibrated?

If your answer was 'no,' you're in good company. But let's take a step further into why you may want to consider the forward-facing camera calibration.

Windshield replacement and camera removal are the triggers everyone knows. But the manufacturer's criteria also look at damage severity: anything beyond outer-panel cosmetic damage (ding, dent, scratch, refinish) calls for a forward-facing camera calibration, because a hit that hard can shift what the camera sees.

What a week and a half it's been for AirPro. Josh Cascanet and Steve Zinanti flew across the country to attend Auto Body Association of Texas (ABAT), Collision Next, and PDR Expo.

Along the way, they:
• Met collision repair and glass professionals, and made great new connections.
• Joined a panel at Collision Next to talk about "Beyond ADAS, Where the Work Goes Next."
• Caught up on the latest ADAS trends, OEM procedure updates, and where the industry is headed.

A major insurer, Farmers Insurance, is now telling drivers to ask their body shop three things: who’s doing the ADAS calibration, whether the car has to be sent elsewhere, and whether they’ll get documentation.

If your shop can answer all three on the spot, your customer can trust that you’ll have the process and documentation done correctly.

If it can’t, your competitor’s answer is the one your customer hears.
