Quick test. What was that vendor's insurance coverage on March 12, 2024? πŸ€”

No? Nothing? Same.

Claims show up 18 to 24 months after the recovery. So the question always arrives long after everybody involved has moved on to roughly four hundred other assignments.

And the attorney does not want to know if the vendor is compliant today. Today is easy. Today you can look it up.

They want March 12, 2024. Coverage in force that day. License active that day. Personnel screened before that day.

Your memory is not going to save you here. Your filing system might. 🀌

A new episode of On Hook with James McNeil is live.

James sits down with John Messiha, Head of Loss Mitigation and Lending Operations at Bridgecrest, for a wide-ranging conversation that moves between personal history, leadership, and an honest look at how lenders and recovery companies actually work together.

John shares how his family and upbringing shaped his work ethic, why September 11 led him to join the Marine Corps, and what he learned working on F-18 electronic countermeasure systems. He carried those leadership principles into his civilian career, starting with the one that matters most: take care of the people responsible for getting the mission accomplished.

From there the conversation follows his path through Bank of America, Capital One, Uber, Goldman Sachs, and Bridgecrest, including the experiences that first connected him to the repossession industry and the people who helped shape his approach to lender and recovery-partner relationships.

James and John also dig into the bigger conversations our industry keeps having:

β€’ What lenders and repossession companies misunderstand about one another
β€’ Why relationships and scorecards both matter
β€’ How performance should influence allocation
β€’ The role of direct agents and forwarders
β€’ Compliance and contract challenges
β€’ Industry standards, and what it takes to build partnerships that last

Along the way there are stories about conferences, old business cards, Air Jordans, barbecue, military history, and bourbon, plus the many people John credits with helping shape his career.

It is personal, candid, and often funny, and it offers a real look at how one lender leader thinks about relationships, accountability, performance, and the future of this industry.

The August issue of The Recovery Insider is out, and ARA President Todd Case opens it with a challenge worth reading twice.

At several client and industry events over the past few months, he was asked a version of the same question: what can I do to help the industry? His answer was short. Get involved. Join your state association. Join a national one. Raise your hand for a committee or an advisory board. If you are not involved, you cannot expect to have a voice in the direction of this industry.

He also noticed something from the back of those rooms. During presentations, a surprising number of people were on their phones. The men and women on those stages are volunteers who stepped away from their companies and their families because they believe this industry can be better. As Todd puts it, it is time to stop being the Monday-morning quarterback and get in the game.

Also in this issue:

β€’ ARA's 62nd Annual Convention, September 29-30 at the Westin Stonebriar Dallas Golf Resort & Spa in Frisco, Texas
β€’ How the election works, with three Board seats open this year
β€’ NARS 2027 sponsorship packages, now available for April 14-16 in Orlando
β€’ A call for three Executive Members to serve on ARA's new Standard Operating Procedures Committee
β€’ A reminder that ARA's Compliance, Vetting and Monitoring Program is open to lenders, forwarders, and agencies whether or not they are ARA members
β€’ Vendor spotlight on Cubepros, upcoming industry events, and this month's new member listings

Big opportunity alert, ARA Executive Members! πŸ“’

We're building something brand new: a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Committee, and this is your chance to help shape it from the ground up.

Right now, ARA doesn't have a comprehensive Policy and Procedure Manual. That's about to change, and we want YOU in the room when it happens.

We're looking for 3 Executive Members to team up with ARA's President and Vice President and build something that will guide this Association for years to come.

Here's what it takes:

βœ… Current ARA Executive Member
βœ… Ready to dive in and actively shape the SOPs
βœ… A collaborative mindset and strong team energy
βœ… Time and commitment to help build something truly professional

This isn't just a committee seat. It's a chance to leave your fingerprint on how ARA operates, grows, and succeeds moving forward.

Ready to make an impact? Send your application to [email protected] and let's talk!
