June 13, 2020. 11:20 AM. To the two male bicyclists on Shady Grove Road heading towards Walmart traffic light, from the direction of the Ashford Subdivision:
What you witnessed when the driver ed car passed uncomfortably close (Estimated approx. 3-5 mph faster than you, 9-12 inches from the passenger side mirror, even though from your perspective it may seem even closer) was a ROAD TEST FAILURE. The profane curses directed at the driver/passenger were WELL DESERVED and in behalf of the nervous 15-year-old boy taking the test, SORRY SORRY SORRY. The boy was moved to tears afterwards. He definitely learned and will remember to give bicyclists much more room, or if necessary, patiently follow behind until safe overtake is available.
The instructor had trained on this subject, and just prior to the test made the comment, "There are a LOT of bicyclists on the road today.... be patient and give them lots of room." However, chalk it up to nerves, the boy didn't have the presence of mind to stay behind you.
The job of examiner is to intervene only to prevent collision, as it constitutes automatic failure. Admittedly it was plenty close enough for the examiner to almost take preventive measures.
Dutch Fork Driving School expresses sincere apology on the close call and hope no bad feelings linger...
