This biggest threat I've seen to all vehicles is the lack of proper maintenance by their owners. It goes beyond just getting an oil change, and the worst part is that the internal damage caused is not visible until it's too late.

Customer stated vehicle randomly stalled and was hard to start and sometimes when you hit throttle it dies.
I diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the fuel pump was weak and intermittent. However, the customer disagreed and wanted me to change the spark plugs. I replaced the plugs as requested, but it did not make a difference. I knew the spark plugs were not the issue because I checked and all 4 cylinders were getting spark while the vehicle was running. The customer then insisted on cleaning the throttle body, even though I already suspected that wasn't the problem. Long story short, after replacing 7 different parts, the customer admitted that they were mistaken and apologized for not trusting my expertise. I explained to them that a misfire code can be caused by many different things sometimes. I finally replaced the fuel pump, and the truck ran perfectly without stalling or shutting off. As a professional mechanic, I always focus on diagnosing the exact problem and only replace parts when necessary in order to save people money. Sometimes, people can be stubborn and need to learn the hard way, but eventually they realize the value of proper diagnosis before part replacement.

Today, the starter went out at the post office, and there was also a short to ground on the firewall, which probably caused it. I fixed my silverado in the parking lot, and now we're rolling again.

In my first head job, I had to remove the cylinder head to send it to the machine shop because a valve was stuck due to lack of maintenance. This caused a misfire, and the engine was only running on five cylinders. After completing the job, the motor ran great and was firing on all cylinders.
