The biggest weekend in Indianapolis is behind us.

Over 300,000 visitors. A million conversations about cars. The west side of the city back to its normal hum. Memorial Day spent the way it should be.

For us at Edwards Transmissions+, this weekend is a reminder of what this city is built on. Hard work. Skilled hands. A culture that respects what happens under the hood.

We have been serving Central Indiana drivers for 40+ years. Through 44 of the city's biggest weekends. Through every era of automotive change. Through generations of customers who trusted us with their vehicles, and trusted their kids to drive vehicles we worked on.

May closes. Summer begins. Seven locations are here when you need us.

A big week for Francisco Valle.

Francisco celebrated his 7-year anniversary with Edwards Transmissions+ on May 28 and his birthday on May 29.

Francisco serves as our Shop Foreman, a role that requires both technical depth and the ability to lead other technicians through complex diagnostic and repair work. Seven years into this job, his knowledge of transmissions and his steady presence in the shop are a real asset to our team and to every customer who comes through our doors.

Happy birthday and thank you for seven years, Francisco.

Tech Tip Tuesday: The Torque Converter Lockup Clutch

The torque converter lets an automatic transmission-equipped vehicle sit still at idle without stalling. It does that by using fluid coupling instead of a direct mechanical connection between the engine and transmission.

That fluid coupling is efficient for launching the vehicle, but at highway speeds it wastes energy through what is called slippage. To eliminate that loss, modern torque converters include a lockup clutch that mechanically locks the engine and transmission together once the vehicle reaches cruising speed.

When the lockup clutch operates correctly, fuel economy improves and transmission fluid temperature drops. When it fails, the symptoms are specific. A shudder that feels like a rumble strip at steady highway speeds, between roughly 40 and 60 mph. Hesitation when the torque converter tries to lock. Increased fuel consumption that shows up on the highway, not around town.

Shudder in the torque converter lockup clutch is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed transmission symptoms. It often gets blamed on tires or engine misfires. A proper diagnosis at a transmission-focused shop identifies it correctly the first time.

Today is Memorial Day.

For all the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country, we remember you. For the families who carry that loss, we stand with you.

At Edwards Transmissions+, our own president, Carla Tyner, is a United States veteran. Her service, and the service of every member of our armed forces, is not lost on us. Today is a day to pause, recognize the cost, and honor the lives behind the freedoms we too often take as ordinary.

From all of us at Edwards Transmissions+, thank you.

Tech Tip Tuesday: The Planetary Gear Set

The planetary gear set is the mechanical core of most automatic transmissions. It is how a single input shaft produces multiple output gear ratios without requiring the transmission to physically move gears in and out of engagement like a manual transmission does.

The configuration is simple in principle. A central sun gear sits in the middle. Surrounding it, a set of planet gears orbit and mesh with the sun. An outer ring gear surrounds all of them. By holding one component stationary and driving another, the transmission produces different gear ratios.

What makes this powerful is that multiple planetary sets can be combined and controlled by clutch packs and bands to produce six, eight, ten, or even more forward gears from a compact package.

When a planetary gear set fails, the symptoms are immediate and severe. A missing gear, a loud whining noise, metal debris in the pan, or complete loss of drive in certain ranges.

Diagnosing planetary-related failures requires teardown. There is no external scan that confirms which gear set is damaged. This is the kind of repair specialist shops handle every week.

20 years.

Chris Coffman joined Edwards Transmissions+ on May 19, 2006. Two decades later, he is still under the hood, still diagnosing, still one of the reasons our customers get a straight answer and a quality repair.

Twenty years in this trade is not common. It takes commitment to keep learning as vehicles get more complex, and it takes a work ethic that shows up every day regardless of what the job is.

When a customer leaves our shop with a transmission running the way it should, Chris is often part of the reason. Twenty years of that work adds up to thousands of vehicles back on the road, thousands of families getting to work, school, and home safely.

Thank you, Chris. 20 years. That is something worth recognizing.

Race weekend is one week away.

By next Friday, every interstate around Indianapolis will be packed. Hotels within 30 miles will be sold out. The west side of the city becomes its own ecosystem for four days, and the rest of Central Indiana's roads absorb the spillover.

If your vehicle has been showing any small symptoms, this is the week to handle them. A check engine light that has been on. A shift that has felt slightly off. A fluid spot on the driveway that was not there six months ago. These are the things that turn into a breakdown when traffic is bumper to bumper, temperatures are in the 80s, and a tow truck is going to take three hours to reach you.

The signs you usually get before a transmission problem are subtle. A delayed engagement on cold starts. A hesitation when you press the accelerator from a stop. RPMs climbing higher than they used to before the next gear engages.

These early signals rarely trigger a warning light. They do indicate that something has started to change inside the transmission. Catching it now keeps the repair small. Waiting until it gets worse during race weekend traffic is how a service becomes a rebuild.

Edwards Transmissions+ has been serving Central Indiana drivers for 40+ years. Seven locations. Specialist-level diagnostics.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Transmission Fluid Specifications

Not all transmission fluid is the same. Using the wrong specification is one of the most common contributors to premature transmission wear, and the damage usually does not show up until thousands of miles later.

Modern automatic transmissions are engineered around specific fluid chemistry. Dexron VI, Mercon LV, Toyota WS, Chrysler ATF+4, and Ford MERCON ULV all have different viscosity profiles, friction coefficients, and additive packages. A fluid that performs correctly in one transmission can cause harsh shifting, slippage, or internal wear in another.

The reason this matters beyond the label is that transmission control modules are calibrated to a specific fluid's friction behavior. When fluid chemistry is wrong, the TCM's shift timing no longer matches how the clutch packs actually engage.

A service is only as good as the fluid going into the transmission. At Edwards Transmissions+, we confirm the OEM specification for your specific vehicle before any service begins.

Five years.

Michael Stamatopoulos joined Edwards Transmissions+ on May 10, 2021 as part of our management team. Five years in, his steady judgment and commitment to how this shop operates have made a real difference.

Managing a transmission shop is not a role that rewards shortcuts. It requires attention to detail, accountability to customers, and the ability to support a technician team that works on complex repairs every day. Michael brings all of that to the role.

Thank you for five years, Mike.

To every mother keeping her family moving, today is for you.

You have been the first call when a car made a noise. You have been the one who kept kids on schedule, groceries in the house, and life in motion, often all at once. That work rarely gets a holiday, but today it does.

Happy Mother's Day from all of us at Edwards Transmissions+.
