Harvest season is here, and that means more farm equipment on Indiana roads.

Combines, grain carts, and tractors move slowly, take up a lot of space, and have large blind spots. If you come up behind one on a two-lane road, give the operator room and be patient.

A few things to remember:
• Farm equipment often swings right before making a wide left turn. Do not pass near a field entrance.
• The orange slow-moving-vehicle triangle means the equipment is traveling 25 mph or less. The gap closes faster than it may look.
• Dusk can make equipment, dust, and road edges harder to see. Slow down and leave more space.

An extra minute is worth a safer trip for everyone sharing the road.

The first rain after a long dry stretch can make Central Indiana roads especially slick.

Oil, rubber, and road grime build up during dry weather. When rain starts, that residue mixes with the water before it washes away. Wet leaves can reduce traction even more, especially in curves, intersections, and shaded areas.

A few reminders for fall driving:
• Leave extra following distance
• Slow down before a curve, not while you are in it
• Avoid hard braking on wet leaves
• Check your wiper blades before the next storm

If your vehicle has been hesitating, slipping, or shifting differently, have it checked before poor road conditions add another problem.

Tech Tip Tuesday: What We Learn from the Transmission Pan

When we remove a transmission pan during service, what we find inside helps us understand what is happening in the unit.

Here is what a technician looks for:
• Fluid condition and odor. Very dark fluid or a burnt smell can point to excess heat, though color alone does not tell the whole story.
• Material on the magnet. A light coating of fine gray material can be normal. Larger metal pieces are not.
• Shiny flakes or fragments. These may point to bearing, gear, clutch, or washer wear and call for a closer inspection.

This is one reason a pan service can tell us more than a fluid exchange through the cooler lines. Seeing the pan, magnet, and filter helps us make a better recommendation.

Today we are celebrating seven years with Richard House.

Richard joined Edwards Transmissions+ as General Manager in September 2019. He helps keep our locations working together and makes sure the same standard applies in every shop: diagnose the problem carefully, explain the options clearly, and do the work right.

Much of that work happens behind the scenes, but our customers and our team see the results every day.

Tech Tip Tuesday: What the Transmission Filter Does

On many vehicles, a filter or screen inside the transmission pan catches normal wear material and helps keep it away from the pump and valve body.

As that filter collects debris, fluid flow can become restricted. You may notice delayed engagement on a cold start, a whining sound that changes with engine speed, sluggish shifts when the vehicle is cold, or slipping under load.

Cooler weather can make an existing restriction more noticeable because cold transmission fluid is thicker.

The correct service depends on the vehicle. Some filters are replaced during a pan service; others are internal or designed differently. We check the manufacturer’s procedure and the condition of the fluid before recommending the next step.

Michael joined the Edwards Transmissions+ technician team on September 4, 2020. Since then, he has become one of the people we count on for careful diagnostics and complicated repair work.

Your tires lost pressure last night and you did not do anything wrong.

Tire pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 10-degree drop in outside temperature. Central Indiana just went from overnight lows in the 70s to overnight lows in the mid-50s. That is a real loss of about 2 PSI across your whole vehicle, and it happened while you were asleep.

Underinflated tires do three things you do not want. They wear faster on the outside edges. They reduce fuel economy. And they change how your vehicle handles in exactly the conditions fall is about to hand you: wet pavement and early morning fog.

Check your pressure cold, before you drive, first thing in the morning. The correct number is on the sticker inside your driver door jamb, not on the tire sidewall. The sidewall number is the maximum the tire can hold, not what your vehicle needs.

This is a five-minute job that most drivers skip until the dashboard light comes on. By then you have been driving under inflated for weeks.
