Your tires lost pressure last night and you did not do anything wrong.

Tire pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 10-degree drop in outside temperature. Central Indiana just went from overnight lows in the 70s to overnight lows in the mid-50s. That is a real loss of about 2 PSI across your whole vehicle, and it happened while you were asleep.

Underinflated tires do three things you do not want. They wear faster on the outside edges. They reduce fuel economy. And they change how your vehicle handles in exactly the conditions fall is about to hand you: wet pavement and early morning fog.

Check your pressure cold, before you drive, first thing in the morning. The correct number is on the sticker inside your driver door jamb, not on the tire sidewall. The sidewall number is the maximum the tire can hold, not what your vehicle needs.

This is a five-minute job that most drivers skip until the dashboard light comes on. By then you have been driving under inflated for weeks.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Your Cooling System and Transmission Work Together

Most drivers think of the radiator as an engine component, but on many vehicles it also helps cool the transmission fluid.

Transmission fluid travels through a cooler built into or mounted near the radiator. If the coolant is low, the radiator is restricted, or the engine is running hot, the transmission fluid can run hotter too. Heat is hard on fluid, seals, and internal parts.

A few signs worth paying attention to:
• Shifting changes after a longer drive
• The temperature gauge climbs in traffic
• You notice a sweet coolant smell after driving

When we diagnose a transmission concern, we check the cooling system too. The two systems affect each other, and looking at both helps us find the real cause.

By the time summer ends, every transmission in Central Indiana has absorbed a season of heat, traffic, towing, and long highway drives. For most vehicles, the effects of that stress will not show up until fall or winter, when a small summer issue has had time to become a noticeable symptom.

The smart move is to get ahead of it. A transmission fluid inspection now, before the weather turns, identifies whatever the summer did. Fluid that has broken down. Seals that have started to weep. Components that have been working harder than they should.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Shift Solenoids

Shift solenoids are small electrically operated valves inside an automatic transmission. They control where hydraulic fluid goes, and that determines which clutch packs engage and when.

The transmission control module sends an electrical signal to a solenoid. The solenoid opens or closes a hydraulic passage in the valve body. Fluid pressure routes to the correct clutch pack. The transmission shifts. All of it happens in a fraction of a second, dozens of times during a normal drive.

Most modern transmissions have between four and eight solenoids handling different functions, including shift timing, line pressure control, and torque converter lockup.

When a solenoid fails, the symptoms are specific and usually noticeable. The transmission gets stuck in one gear. It skips a gear entirely during upshift. Shifts become harsh or delayed. The check engine light comes on with a transmission-related code. In some cases the vehicle drops into limp mode.

The good news is that solenoid failure is often one of the less expensive transmission repairs. Many are accessible by dropping the pan without removing the transmission from the vehicle.

The key is a correct diagnosis. A failing solenoid can produce symptoms that look like far more serious internal damage. Proper testing at a transmission-focused shop confirms the actual cause before any parts get replaced.

Buying a used vehicle this fall? A pre-purchase transmission inspection is one of the best $109 you can spend.

A transmission on the edge of failure can feel completely normal on a short test drive. Transmissions do not usually fail all at once. They give small signals over months or years before symptoms become obvious to a driver who is unfamiliar with the vehicle.

A specialist-level inspection catches what a test drive does not. Fluid condition and level. Evidence of slippage in scan tool data. Temperature behavior under load. Leaks, internal wear indicators, and service history visible through diagnostic channels.
