Tech Tip Tuesday: Clutch Packs

Inside an automatic transmission, clutch packs use alternating friction and steel plates to hold different parts of the gearset. Hydraulic pressure applies the correct pack for each gear.

The friction material wears over time. If a clutch cannot hold firmly, it begins to slip. That slipping creates heat, and the extra heat can speed up the damage.

A driver may notice:

✔️Engine speed rising without the vehicle accelerating normally
✔️A delay before the vehicle responds to the throttle
✔️Soft or drawn-out shifts
✔️A burnt smell after driving

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and shorter days make this a good time for a few reminders.

More evening driving now happens in low light. Windshield glare, a burned-out headlight, and a little extra speed can make someone walking or biking much harder to see.

Before your next drive:

✔️Check that both low beams are working
✔️Clean the inside and outside of the windshield
✔️Slow down in neighborhoods and near crosswalks
✔️Give yourself extra time to react at dusk
✔️Put the phone away before the vehicle moves

Tech Tip Tuesday: What the Valve Body Does

The valve body directs pressurized fluid through an automatic transmission. Its passages, valves, and solenoids control when clutches apply, how firm a shift feels, and when the torque converter locks.

When something in the valve body is not working correctly, symptoms may come and go. You might notice a harsh shift one day, delayed engagement the next, or a gear that occasionally does not engage.

Possible causes include a sticking valve, a worn valve bore, a failed solenoid, wiring trouble, or debris in the fluid. Those problems can feel like internal transmission damage, which is why testing matters.

Some valve-body repairs can be completed without rebuilding the entire transmission. The first step is confirming where the problem is.

Tech Tip Tuesday: When Reverse Starts Acting Different

Reverse can develop a problem even when the forward gears still feel normal. Depending on the transmission, Reverse may use a different clutch, band, solenoid, valve-body circuit, or combination of components.

Common warning signs include:
• A delay after shifting into Reverse
• A harsh or banging engagement
• Slipping while backing up a hill
• No Reverse even though the vehicle still moves forward

Low or worn fluid, an electrical issue, a valve-body problem, or internal wear can all cause similar symptoms. That is why the symptom alone does not tell you whether the transmission needs a small repair or a rebuild.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Transmission Speed Sensors

Your transmission relies on speed sensors to know what is happening inside the unit.

The input sensor measures how fast the turbine shaft is turning. The output sensor measures the speed leaving the transmission. The control module compares those readings to determine gear ratio, monitor for slip, and manage shift timing.

When a sensor or its wiring fails, you may see an erratic speedometer, a check-engine light, poor shift quality, or limp mode that holds the transmission in one gear.

Those symptoms can look like a serious internal problem, but sometimes the repair is a sensor, connector, or wiring issue. A proper scan and diagnosis should come before a major repair decision.
