The new school year is here, and as you head back to school, remember that getting there safely is just as important as getting there on time. Whether you're driving yourself, riding with a friend, walking, or taking the bus, stay alert and be aware of the people around you.

For our student drivers, remember to:

1. Slow down and stay alert in school zones.
2. Watch carefully for pedestrians and students crossing the road.
3. Follow school-zone speed limits and traffic signs.
4. Put your phone away and keep distractions to a minimum.
5. Give school buses plenty of space and follow the law when they stop.
6. Give yourself extra time in the morning—rushing isn't worth the risk.

A new school year is a fresh start, so make safe driving a part of the routine from day one.

As temperatures change throughout the year, steel and concrete naturally expand in the summer and contract in the winter. On very large bridges, that movement can measure 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 from one season to the next.

To handle these changes safely, engineers install special bearings, rollers, and expansion joints that allow the bridge to move without cracking or placing excessive stress on the structure. If bridges were built completely rigid, the constant expansion and contraction could eventually cause serious damage.

It's one of the most important engineering features on a bridge—and one that most drivers cross without ever noticing.

While white and yellow pavement markings are the standard in most countries, some cities and regions use 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 to serve a special purpose. Traffic engineers carefully choose colors because our brains recognize them much faster than words on a sign. By using different pavement colors, drivers can often understand how a roadway should be used with just a quick glance.

It's a simple design feature that helps improve traffic flow, reduce confusion, and make roads safer for everyone.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 "𝐬𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬"?

Known as 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐬, these massive reinforced concrete structures are built over sections of roadway that are especially vulnerable to avalanches or falling rocks. Rather than trying to stop nature, engineers designed these structures so snow, ice, and debris slide over the roadway while vehicles travel safely underneath.

You'll find avalanche sheds in mountainous regions around the world, including parts of the United States, Canada, Japan, and Switzerland.

It's an incredible example of how engineering works with nature instead of against it.
