🚛 Maximize Your Diesel’s Lifespan: Essential Maintenance Tips 🛠️

Diesel engines are famous for their rugged durability and long lifespans, but they operate under much higher compression and heat than gasoline engines. To protect your investment and avoid massive repair bills, preventative care is essential.

The fleet experts at Speed Wrench compiled the ultimate checklist to keep your diesel vehicle running efficiently:

• Perform Regular Radiator Flushes: Diesel engines run hot, making the cooling system a frequent point of failure. Plan regular coolant and radiator exchanges to prevent warped components and engine failure.
• Know the Warning Signs: Check your cooling system immediately if you spot green or orange fluid pooling under the truck, notice a sweet, maple syrup-like smell, or see steam escaping from the hood.
• Keep Gunk Off the Engine: Because diesels handle heavy-duty tasks, dirt, dust, and winter road salt can rapidly collect in the engine bay. Use a specialized degreaser, a moist sponge, and an old toothbrush to carefully clean components when the engine is cool.
• Stock Your Roadside Emergency Kit: Always carry essential backup items in your truck cab. Make sure your kit includes extra engine oil, coolant, DEF fluid, a fresh fuel filter, a fuel filter wrench, and windshield washer fluid.

Don't wait for a critical breakdown on the highway to start thinking about engine care. Following a steady service routine keeps your injectors clean, protects your turbo, and ensures your vehicle lasts well past the 200,000-mile mark.

🚗 Mystery Puddle Under Your Car? Here is Your Quick Color Guide! 💧

We have all been there. You walk up to your vehicle and spot a mysterious liquid pooling on the pavement. Before you panic, you can narrow down the culprit just by looking at its color, texture, and smell.

The automotive experts at Speed Wrench broke down exactly how to decode your car's fluids:
🔴 Red / Red-Brown: Power steering fluid or automatic transmission fluid. These are slick, oily hydraulic fluids.
🟡 Light Yellow: Brake fluid (turns darker brown as it ages). It feels slippery and smells a bit like fish oil. Do not drive—call a mechanic immediately!
🟢 🟡 🌸 Green, Yellow, or Pink: Fresh engine coolant. It has a distinctly sweet smell and a slimy texture.
🟠 Orange: This usually indicates aged transmission fluid, or it means there is rust inside your engine cooling system.
🔵 Blue: Windshield washer fluid. It is watery and smells exactly like window cleaner.
🟤 ⚫ Brown or Black: Engine oil. It is thick and slippery, turning blacker as it collects dirt from inside your engine.
💧 Clear: If it is odorless, it is just harmless water condensation from your air conditioner. If it smells like gasoline, do not start your engine and call a professional right away.

Catching a small leak early prevents unsettlingly high repair bills and keeps you from getting stuck on the side of the highway.
If you are noticing a leak and live in the West Michigan area, the team at Speed Wrench is ready to fix it right, right now.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tom Mastbergen, a dedicated member of the Speed Wrench team for 33 years.

Over the years, Tom’s career reflected his commitment and knowledge — beginning as a mobile mechanic, then serving as a sales representative, and most recently as a parts administrator in our crane division.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Tom’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

What's going on in the shop this week?

2011 Ford Motorhome with a catastrophic engine failure. Unfortunately this engine will need to be replaced to get this coach back on the road.
Replacement of the engine is pretty labor intensive but we are confident Nick will get it put back together and the owners will be able to enjoy their summer of travel!
