We've spent the month talking about tires, batteries, lights, fluids and brakes. Here's the short version.

The clocks go back this Sunday night. On Monday, sunset in Hudson is 5:21. Most of you will drive home in the dark for the first time since February.

That's a good week to notice things. A headlight that's dimmer than the other. A dash cluster you can't quite read. Wipers that streak when the headlights hit the rain just so.

None of it is an emergency. All of it is easier to fix in a warm shop in November than in a cold driveway in January. Give us a call and we'll take care of it.

Winter driving prep isn't only about the car. Some of it is about what's in the trunk when things go wrong.

Ice scraper and brush. A blanket. A flashlight that actually has batteries. Gloves. A phone charger. A small jump pack if you want to be the hero in the parking lot. If you've still got golf clubs in there, that's your call, but they don't scrape ice well.

Going is easy. Stopping is the part winter makes hard.

On a MINI especially, brakes that felt fine all summer can feel very different on cold, wet pavement. Pads near the end, a rotor with a lip, a caliper that's sticking a little: none of it announces itself until you really need to stop.

We measure pad thickness and rotor condition on every corner and tell you honestly where you are. Months left? Great. Getting close? Now is the time, not after the first slide.

Winter prep, the part nobody posts photos of: fluids.

Coolant is the obvious one. It's what keeps the block from freezing, and the protection level drops as it ages. We test it, not guess it.

Oil matters more than people think. Cold starts are the hardest thing an engine does all day, and tired oil makes them harder. If you're close to due, do it now rather than in December.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. In the cold that's a softer pedal exactly when you want a firm one.

That light you've been driving around with since summer? October is the month to find out what it is.

Small problems get bigger in the cold. A sensor that's drifting, a coolant leak you can't smell yet, a battery that's borderline. In July the car shrugs it off. In January it leaves you on the shoulder.

We take what we call a forensic approach: dealer-level scanning and coding, then actually chasing the cause instead of clearing the code and hoping. We've been doing it on BMW and MINI since 1999.

Winter driving is mostly a visibility problem. Salt spray, sleet, a windshield that fogs the second you get in.

Three cheap things fix most of it. Wiper blades that actually clear instead of smear (summer sun cooks the rubber, so last year's are probably done). Washer fluid rated for freezing, because the summer stuff turns to slush in the lines. And a defroster that pushes real heat, which on a BMW or MINI sometimes means a cabin filter that's overdue.

Sunset in Hudson was 7:09 on October 1. By Halloween it's 6:24. A lot of you are going to spend the evening commute in the dark from here until March.

So do the two-minute walk-around. Headlights, both low and high. Brake lights, which means somebody has to stand behind the car while you press the pedal. Turn signals, reverse lights, the little plate lights that always go first.

And if your headlight lenses have gone yellow and cloudy, that's not cosmetic. It's less light on the road exactly when you need more. We can sort both.

A lot of BMWs around here left the dealer on summer performance tires. They're fantastic in July. Below about 45 degrees, the rubber stiffens and they start giving up grip, before any snow has fallen.

All-seasons soften that, but they're a compromise too. A true winter tire stays flexible in the cold, which is the whole point.

Which one you need depends on the car, how you drive it and whether you have somewhere to keep a second set. We'll give you a straight answer. And when it's time to swap, we mount and Road Force balance on Hunter equipment, right here, so there's no vibration at 70 on Route 8.
