TECH TIP: Should You Put Gas Cans in Your Car?
Gas cans should never be stored inside your vehicle and should only be transported when absolutely necessary.
Even a sealed gas can can release fumes, especially in warm weather or if it tips over. Gasoline fumes can build up inside the vehicle and may cause:
Headaches
Dizziness
Nausea
Eye, nose, and throat irritation
Trouble breathing in stronger exposure
The biggest danger is that gasoline vapors are extremely flammable. A small spark, cigarette, static electricity, or electrical issue could create a serious fire hazard.
If you must transport gas:
Use an approved gas container
Make sure the cap and vent are fully sealed
Keep the can upright and secured
Place it in the trunk, cargo area, or truck bed
Keep windows cracked for ventilation
Remove the gas can as soon as possible
Never leave gas cans sitting in a hot vehicle
Roy’s Auto Tip:
If you smell gasoline inside your vehicle, don’t ignore it. Pull over safely, shut the vehicle off, ventilate the area, and remove the gas can if it is safe to do so.
Keep your vehicle safe. Keep fumes out. Transport fuel the right way.
