Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT)

Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) represents the ECU’s immediate correction. Using feedback from the oxygen or air-fuel ratio sensors, the ECU makes rapid adjustments to injector pulse width to maintain the commanded air-fuel ratio. These are the fast, real-time corrections happening every second as operating conditions change.

When STFT is positive, the ECU is adding fuel because it detects a lean condition. When STFT is negative, the ECU is removing fuel because it detects a rich condition. Think of STFT as the ECU’s instant reaction to what it is seeing right now.

Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT)

Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) is the ECU’s learned correction over time. When the ECU detects a repeated pattern in STFT adjustments, it begins storing those corrections as learned values. Instead of constantly making the same short-term adjustment, it applies a baseline correction to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary compensation.

LTFT essentially represents the ECU’s memory. It reflects long-term trends caused by changes such as sensor aging, airflow deviations, fuel delivery changes, or calibration inaccuracies.

Fuel trims reveal how much correction the ECU is making to maintain proper fueling. Small corrections usually indicate accurate airflow and fuel calculations, while large positive or negative trims suggest something has changed. Positive trims mean the ECU is adding fuel (lean condition), while negative trims mean it’s removing fuel (rich condition), often pointing to issues like vacuum leaks, MAF scaling errors, injector issues, or fuel delivery problems.

From a tuning perspective, fuel trims are one of the clearest windows into calibration accuracy. They help us understand not just what the engine is doing, but how much correction is required to achieve the desired result.

Tuning Tech Sunday - MAF SCALING

Ever heard a tuner talk about MAF scaling and wondered what it actually means?

One of the most critical but often overlooked part of ECU calibration is MAF scaling. The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine, typically by outputting a frequency or voltage signal. The ECU then references a calibration table to convert that signal into an airflow value, usually expressed in grams per second (g/s).This airflow value is not only used for fueling calculations, but also plays a major role in determining engine load, volumetric efficiency correlation, torque estimation, ignition strategy, throttle control, and transmission behavior especially in modern torque based ECU architectures. MAF scaling is the calibration process of correcting the MAF transfer function so the reported airflow accurately reflects the engine’s true airflow across the entire operating range.

Effects of poor MAF scaling:
●Incorrect calculated load values
●Fuel trims deviating significantly positive or negative
●Commanded lambda and actual lambda mismatch
●Inaccurate torque calculation
●Suboptimal ignition advance due to incorrect load referencing
●Inconsistent throttle mapping and torque intervention
●Shift quality degradation in electronically controlled transmissions

In a torque based control strategy, this becomes even more critical because the ECU does not simply respond to pedal input, it continuously calculates delivered torque vs requested torque. Since airflow is a major input in torque modeling, inaccurate MAF data can cause torque estimation errors, resulting in unnecessary torque limiting, throttle closures, or inconsistent power delivery.

Effects of properly scaled MAF data:
●Accurate airflow calculation across the load range
●Fuel trims closer to zero, indicating proper fueling model correlatio
●Improved commanded vs actual lambda tracking
●More accurate load and torque estimation
●More consistent ignition targeting
●Better throttle predictability and pedal response
●Smoother transmission shift scheduling and torque management
●Improved drivability and calibration stability

TUNING TECH SUNDAY

- Ignition Based ECU -

Some vehicles with ignition based ecu:
- 2nd Gen Tacoma (Gen 1 ECU )
- 5th Gen 4Runner (Gen1 & Gen2 ECU)
- 3rd Gen Tacoma (Gen2 ECU)

Ignition based ECU tuning focuses on directly controlling engine behavior through ignition timing, fueling, and basic airflow adjustments. In these systems, the ECU primarily reacts to sensor inputs rather than calculating a full torque model. Throttle control is often simpler, and power output is largely influenced by spark advance, fuel delivery, and airflow efficiency. From a tuning perspective, ignition-based systems are generally more straightforward because the tuner directly modifies how the engine responds under different operating conditions.

“I want more power, so I’ll add more timing and fuel to make the engine stronger.”

- Torque Based ECU -

Some vehicles with torque based ecu:
- 4th Gen Tacoma (Gen 4 ECU )
- 6th Gen 4Runner ( Gen4 ECU)
- 3rd Gen Tundra (Gen4 ECU)

Torque based ECU tuning operates on a completely different strategy. Instead of simply commanding ignition and fuel changes, the ECU constantly calculates estimated engine torque and uses that value to control nearly every vehicle function. Throttle angle, boost control, transmission shifting, traction control, airflow targets, and torque intervention are all tied into the torque model. In these systems, the ECU decides how much torque is allowed and determines the safest and most efficient way to achieve it. From a tuning perspective, this requires far more advanced calibration work involving airflow modeling, driver demand tables, inverse torque calculations, load limits, transmission torque requests, and torque monitoring systems.
