Arctic Cat snow mobiles had a problem that during startup the pinion, gear would initially extend and engage the flywheel but as the flywheel gained momentum coming off "top dead center" it would accelerate and the pinion would release prematurely, then re-engage again. This effect causes the pinion to act like a piston going back and forth with the flywheel and causes increased noise, premature wear and poor start. Instead of trying to design a starter that could try to run faster to keep up (which means the starter RPM would be over specified and no longer optimal for a variety of reasons including torque and amp draw), we designed a Bendix that could respond instantly to changes in rpm but once the engine did start it would release seamlessly. You can see the difference in this video, the first part is the original problem design followed by the OMI solution.
