Del Rio Flash Flood Recovery — Community Update
July 20, 2026

We've been working hard to determine what residents impacted by the July 11th flash flooding in Del Rio need beyond initial cleanup — and here's where things stand.

Cleaning supplies are not needed. Anyone still needing cleaning supplies can get them through the Del Rio VFD.

Most remaining cleanup will require machinery. Thanks to the overwhelming support of so many in the days right after the flood, most of the hand-labor cleanup is done.

Disaster case management is underway. Catholic Charities of East TN has agreed to cover disaster case management for primary residences — a huge blessing moving forward. Because this is not a federally declared disaster, we're leaning on lessons learned from Helene to apply the right procedures from the start, prevent duplication of services, and make sure every verified resident gets the best possible advocacy.

Funding is the biggest need right now. Since this flooding is not a declared disaster and much of the damage falls outside official flood zones, helping these families is going to come down to raising significant funds. Disaster recovery begins and ends with community - and for a localized flash flood like this, that help comes through the organizations and individuals willing and able to pitch in.

Known necessary repairs so far that we will be coordinating to find help (homes assessed and being contacted to begin case management):
• HVAC repair/replacement - 3 homes
• Driveway gravel and/or culverts - 3 homes
• Electrical repairs (some significant) - 3 homes
• Hot water heaters - 3 homes
• Washers/dryers - 2 homes
• Sump pumps - 2 homes
• Hauling off destroyed items - multiple homes
• Permanent storage container
• Demolition/debris removal - 1 building (serious safety hazard)
• Water filtration system replacement - 1 home
• Roof repair - 1 home
• Underpinning replacement - 1 home
• Handicap ramp replacement - 1 home

🥵 A potentially record-breaking heat wave is on the way to North Carolina and much of the East/Southeast United States, starting mid-week and lasting through the holiday weekend and into early the following week, too. If you know me, I don't hype things, so I'm telling you how it is. I am aware it's summer in North Carolina, and it gets hot, but it's not as common for 5+ days of upper 90s, low 100s, so that's why I am trying to make sure you're aware. All signs in the patterns and data suggest a long duration of 5+ days of potentially record-breaking high temperatures across North Carolina, especially away from the mountains and the beaches.

High temperatures starting Wednesday are looking to be in the upper 90s and low 100s through at least Sunday/Monday. Each day, some spots could reach over 105° during the actual high temperature. The one saving grace, both good and bad, is that the dew points don't look super insane, as the high pressure will be over us and creating drier heat, so heat index values will really only be 105-110°, it seems.

That high, though, will create sinking air, which will result in limited to very little chance of storms, so if you don't get storms or rain today or tomorrow, your odds are not great through next weekend. So the drought will likely worsen.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, as these can contribute to dehydration

If you must be outside, plan activities for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are at their lowest. Avoid strenuous exercise during peak heat hours
( 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM).

Check on neighbors, friends, and family members, especially the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions, as they are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses. Check on your pets, give them plenty of water!!

Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke such as heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, or confusion. If symptoms appear, move to a cooler area immediately and seek medical attention if conditions persist or worsen.
